I am VERY new to Joomla! and web design. I need to replace the Pangea logo that appears at the top of each page with a new logo.

It depends on the template. Some templates have parameters to select the logo and other do not have this feature.

So, what is the template you are using?

What is your site's URL?

Either way, a simplest approach you could take is to rename the existing original logo file, rename your logo file as the original logo file.

My template is PANGEA. I have been unable to identify a logo file. I was able to change the logo in Joomla's Milky Way template by changing the logo file but cannot find it in PANGEA. I also am unable to identify it in the coding.

The logo file is logo.png located in the directory /joomla/pangea/templates/pangea/images.

Generally, in these situations you could use the tool FireBug to inspect elements and view the css entries.

The tool FireBug that is available in browsers such as FireFox and Chrome could be used for this purpose. With FireBug you can inspect an element in a web page and find out its css entries and in which file the entries are located. You could even change the css entries to see how it affects the look and feel of your site. Once you are satisfied you could incorporate the changes in the actual file.

Review the document http://docs.joomla.org/Tutorial:Using_Firebug_With_Your_Joomla_Website for more information about how to use FireBug.
