Hi there. I hope someone can give me a piece of advice. First and foremost, I am new to the Joomla, but I’ve noticed that SEO needs extra attention rather than in non-Joomla sites. I’ve installed an SEO generator extension which creates keywords for you. While this is very helpful and saves time, it’s very basic, in my opinion. It’s definitely better with it, but it’s not creating the best SEO for the web site.
I am finishing working on a web site, and would like to know how to make SEO better? Maybe someone could point to a specific discussion in this forum that gives a step-by-step breakdown or anything like that.

Thank you in advance.

Wow, this entire SEO area seems to be a bit dead.

I'm somewhat new to the SEO side of things also, I do know that on each joomla article, if you go to the article edit page there is a tab above the text editor that says " Publishing & MetaData", click this and then you can add meta descriptions and meta keywords for each article.

Since you posted, have you learned anything else that you could share on this subject?

Well, no. I know that you can add meta descriptions and meta keywords for each article, but I was looking for the recommendations of other people on anything else....

Oh well, maybe once they see the activity more people will respond..

Question, so the areas that are located in the global configuration section under the site tab, that would be the meta tags that live in the header and define the entire site?

Then, the page areas, those are more to define pages content, but does that info also go up into the head of that "page" of the site?

Do I have this correct?

Search engine optimisation (SEO) helps tune website content to improve visibility and being seen is now the key to online success. Search queries bring interested users directly to a website or service. However, the vast majority of those using search engines will not go beyond the first page of results.

There are no short cuts, especially if you use "white hat optimisation" and stay within the guidelines of how the search engines want you to build a website, which we do. Many companies use far to many keywords on each page than the guideline rule of 8-10 which is stipulated by Google, be careful here or you may fall into the "black hat" rule. Content is king, but "relevance" is also king. Content must be feature rich and relevant to the industry you are in, and SEO is more important now than ever before due to the web growing and forever expanding.

The higher you rank in a search engine's index, the more visible you will be. This means more visitors, who can be turned into paying customers. If the SEO is done well, your internet marketing adds value to your brand with more potential return of investment.

This is how I work with all of my client websites that we develop for them.
Many of the comments here including grbrains are true and correct.

The title and description on your Joomla site does define the way the search engines pick up relevant content, but you need to do the SEO properly for every page for the content to be picked up quickly.

Content must be "feature rich" without duplication and the page must be "relevant."

For example, Google changes its business algorithms daily, not weekly, but daily, this is why they have a 92% of the UK market which is growing... There are many variations of what the ISP's want and do, all are guarded secrets and all we can do is learn from each other and grow the knowledge.

KEYWORD CHOICE!
To get your keywords correct for every page, you need to do some market research into what "users" are searching for, the best way to do this before even touching your website is to go to Google and type in "KEYWORDS FOR GOOGLE" this will bring up Google Adwords, you don't need to create an account or anything, you will get a box which loads up in grey and you simply type in the word that you want to use as a keyword and click search, what will then happen next is a JOY to the heart... and you will go OOOOOooooo - or something like that, as it is what I did when I first saw it.
https://adwords.google.co.uk/o/Targeting/Explorer?__c=1000000000&__u=1000000000&ideaRequestType=KEYWORD_IDEAS

Google will tell you how many people have searched for that keyword you have put in, and better still tell you all the other keywords that people have searched for based on that word you have put in! ;D THIS SHOULD BE MAKING YOU GO - YIPPEEEEEEE... Because if you know what your potential customers are putting in to Google to find your services in "real time" and today, you can then use these keywords in your website and attract the right type of person to your site!

Better to know what your customers are searching for than to not know! :)

DO NOT make the mistake in thinking that you know what the keywords are!! You don't, but having this knowledge freely helps you choose the correct keywords on mass, making you a more professional consultant or consultancy.

JOOMLA ARTICLES from an SEO point of view.

If you are looking to be thorough, do not use the SEO extensions available, not at first.. what you should be doing is putting to use the actual Joomla Meta description and keyword boxes on the right hand side of the joomla admin panel. Go to Article Manager, open an article and click on Metadata Options

Meta Description - Add in a sentence and add a phone number
Meta Keywords - Add in your keywords, but don't put more than 10

Several of your keywords that you have placed in the Meta Keywords box should then be in your content in the Article. Try not to bullet point them as Google does not like this. Make the words into sentences so that Google bots and spiders can pick the words up as they go.

I hope this goes some way to helping someone out there and if we can help further, simply reply.

Good luck.

Hey Y365Design,
Thanks for such an in-depth reply! I'm going to test around with this a bit and will report back here.

SEO is the next frontier for me, so to speak, I'd like to be able to add it as a major component of my business within about a year or so, lots of studying to do in the meantime..

Only keyword in title and description is not enough. You need to do SEO on page more. You can read this article: Joomla SEO: Ten FAQs for newbies : [URL banned] . I think it's very helpful for you.

Did you try Joomla SEO extension Sh404SEF ? I love it. Really great.

I'm glad I stumbled upon this topic. I'm "considering" Joomla, and am brand new to this forum, but haven't become a user just yet. I have a few sites that I've built using Homestead Intuit Websites....and the SEO they offer is pretty much non-existent as well. I've found that self-made on-site SEO is definitely worth the work. Depending on how big of a site you're designing, it's shouldn't be THAT time consuming. We just underwent a complete site redesign and it took me two months. Not so much the SEO, but the image creation, adding products and layouts, optimizing for every browser, troubleshooting...things of that nature. I won't give the site URL just yet cause I don't want to get banned for spamming. I'll put it in my signature as soon as I have 10 posts. As far as CMS options go, how does Joomla SEO compare....in your opinions? How easy is it to make adjustments to the meta data? Is it easy to add dofollow attributes, header tags and the like? I have a few more projects coming up around the corner, one an NFL football site and the other a business consulting site....so if Joomla fits for me, those will be my first sites using it.

-Daniel

One of the best way top do SEO is:-
- Write good content
- Write Very good Title Tag
- Write Search Engine Description

It should help. Moreover if you have keyword rich domain name, its going to help further

Can some one tell if it's a good idea to, maybe, hire a company to do the SEO for the web site? Is it worth it?

I just wanted to thank everyone that took the time to respond to this rather large and general question (originally posted by romjoomform). I am also new to Joomla and am just starting to realise how important understanding SEO really is. I followed Y365Design's instructions to look more closely at google keywords - and was absolutely amazed! What a fantastic (and necessary) tool. I only wish I had known about it before I created so much content for my website (that to my surprise uses rather poor google keywords)... Thanks again!

I also found the page in wikipedia (on search engine optimization) to be a useful introduction to the topic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization. So much to learn, so little time :)
