HI there
I am new to Joomla and has some basic knowledge with web hosting.
I moved to a new host, and tried to build my site with joomla 2.5
the host bigrock.com had joomla ready to install, which i did.
it is installed to httpdocs folder (which is in the root). when i load the page in my browser it goes to joomla 404 error page. If i click the home page link in that page it takes me to the index.php.
i can i get my webpage load to the index.php.?
my site url is http://www.jesusransom.com
Your help is much appreciated.

Assuming you have not altered any of the settings etc in the back end administrator and as some of the links and information that are there are working fine, I would sugget somehow the installation got corrupted.
Suggest you either:

A. Remove the Joomla files and directories and drop the tables and start again

OR

B Try uploading the Joomla files and directories excluding the installation directory to overwrite what is already.

You do not say which specific version of Joomla this is 2.5.4 is the latest.

Personally, I would opt for A as if there is this problem early on it is worth starting again from scratch and making sure it all works properly in the first place.

Hi humvee
your quick response is much appreciated. In fact i have tried that option (removing and re installing joomla) severla times. I have installed joomla 2.5.4. It seems that some have experienced the same problem and what they did was add some scripts to the public_html file with .htaccess. which would re-direct the error page to the index.php, I tried that too, by copying the script. Not working yet.
right now when I use this url http://www.jesusransom.com/index.php it works fine. but does not go directly to that location.

Your help is much appreciated. thanks.

Try a non-host direct installation of Joomla! instead using FTP to upload.
Check whether their control panel has upload and unzip facility and use this first.
If not unarchive locally using 7-Zip (not windows own archive manager) and upload with WinSCP (again not windows own FTP client)
Make sure you do both activities with Administrator priviliges for the PC you are on.
Then run the installation process by pointing your browser at just the your basic URL, and take it from there.
One thing also to check does the host have and index.html file of their own in the htdocs/ directory?
Does the host have a Domain manager allowing you to automatically point your domain at a subdirectory for example?

thanks Humvee
the host does not have a index.html file. I have joomla moved from the joomla folder to the root httpdocs where the web site is hosted. I took all the files and folder out from the joomla folder, so that the index.php is not inside any folder.
right now the index.php is in the httpdocs folder itself. There is another folder public_html in the httpdocs. Is this the cause of the problem.?
the 404 error is a joomla page i assume.

still breaking my head to get this done.
as you explained to re install the joomla, i assume that alone will not do, because the installation will be in a joomla folder. Unless I move all the files/folder out of that folder and into the root, how would another install help? Your time in answering this is much appreciated.

I am sure others might have experienced the same while the first install.

thanks again, awaiting your reply

It might be.
I guess it depends if this is duplicating any of the content. If it is empty (or even if it is not at the moment) try removing it (after backing it up off the server by ftp) and see if that makes a difference.
Or again double check with the host as to their "normal" set up.

Is it possible that if you uploaded the files yourself you copied your own httpdocs directory together with the joomla files?

Make sure that the configuration.php file specifies the correct paths for the new location.
Make sure they are configured for a Windows OS.
