By default, in the Article Manager Parameters, the parameter Hits is set to Show.

However, in the menu items, in the tab Parameters (Component), the parameter Hits seems to have been set to Hide.

Check the value of the parameter Hits in the menu item.

EDIT: Modified to answer to reflect 1.5 rather than 2.5

What template are you using? If you are not using one of the default templates such as rhuk_milkyway, try using the template rhuk_milkyway and see what happens.

This will validate whether the issue is with the template.

Edit: changed the template referenced from Beez_20 to rhuk_milkyway

To change the default template, go to the Template Manager, choose the template rhuk_milkyway and click on the icon titled Default.

I just did a little bit of research and found out that Hits is shown only in the table layouts of section and category.

If you want the Hits to show in an article, you have to edit the file default.php that is located in the directory \components\com_content\views\article\tmpl.

Being a core Joomla! file, suggest following the output override technique as documented at http://docs.joomla.org/How_to_override_the_output_from_the_Joomla!_core.
