I am trying to delete super admin users, via MySQL on the back end, and they are back seconds after I delete them. I can change them via Joomla Administrator to "registered" instead of Super, then they magically change back to Super a few seconds later. I try changing the password, and poof it changes back.

What could be causing this?

As far as I know you can not delete Joomla's Super User account. IE, you can't do it in the back-end, and there is probably good reason to as well. Without looking at the framework/security, I'd guess a superuser account is needed to serve up content/extensions, they have to be owned by someone.

Doing operations directly on the DB is not a good thing either. You should however be able to change the password, but use the back-end.

In Joomla 1.5 to delete a SuperAdmin you first have to downgrade them to a lower user level. when you have done that and saved you will be ale to delete them

I am aware that a Super User cannot be deleted. The normal solution is to change that user to something lower, like "registered." In this case, if you change anything about any of these super user ID's - the password, the user type, the email, the name - anything at all, the user pops back to the initial values in a few seconds after you change it. That is why I tried deleting the IDs via MySQL. Unfortunately, "poof" - the ID's reappear in the database in a few seconds.

Are we talking about the 1st Super User account created during install or one that you've created afterwords?

We are talking about accounts created afterwords.

I have narrowed the issue to something plug-in related perhaps. If I rename the /plugins folder to something else, then delete the ID's via MySQL, they don't seem to come back (for 10 minutes). As soon as I rename /plugins back, they magically reappear in the database.

Unfortunately, the site won't come up for users if /plugins is renamed. Any thoughts on what to do from here?

Oh, I thought you meant the main one. "Nevermind". :-[

You can start disabling plugins one-by-one to figure it out. I'd start with System plugins and anything authentication related.

If you start disabling plugins do keep in mind that if you disable the Authentication - Joomla and User - Joomla! plugins you will not be able to login to your back end (or front end). You would have to re-enable them by setting their published state to 1 instead of 0 in your database.

Good point, I meant add-on plugins that fall in that category, not core stuff.

Something like that happens with a reason. I suggest you check your site with http://sitecheck.sucuri.net/scanner/

Good point Leo. The site scans clean, but I am still concerned about it.

There are no triggers on the database, and no cron jobs running, and I have yet to figure out the specific plug-in at fault. I restored the plug-ins folder from an older back-up, but the problem still exists so it must have been around for a while.

I do run RS!Firewall which can prevent changes to the system, but even with it disabled, the user ID's still come back. I wish I had more technical knowledge of Joomla so I could tell what plug-ins are supposed to be there and knew what that do. As I do not have that knowledge, it is taking some time to cautiously work through it all.

I'm having the same problem on my client's Joomla site and was wondering if someone has found a solution to the problem yet. Thanks!
