I'm currently upgrading a 1.5 install to 1.7 (and then on to 2.5 - one thing at a time)
I can't seem to get the menus to display.
When I do a load with index.php?tp=1, I can see the main, user1 and user2 blocks, but nothing apppears there in a normal load. Big blank space.
Can someone walk me through a step by step on what needs to be linked to what to get menus to appear?
I can't find anything labelled user1 and user2 that I could link to a module, and I have items in the main menu, but they don't appear.
Help! :(

Hi caramia

There's no one-size-fits-all answer for this.

Can you share the name of the template you're using? Even better, can you share a link to your site?

Its currently at http://j17.studebakerqld.org.au/, but you'll have to set an entry in your hosts file to point that domain to 110.232.142.41 to see it.
Sorry about the subject!
And its more misleading than that, sorry... after the methods for 'upgrading' from 1.5 that I could find didn't do anything, I decided to install 1.7 from scratch on a subdomain, so its not so much an upgrade, as a fresh install.

The theme is custom, upgraded from a 1.5 template which was based on a GPL 1.5 one called, meaningfully, 'template8'.

Hmmm... also, I've just realised that the only articles that actually work (ie dont 404) are the articles I have linked to menus, and their children. Just entering an article isn't enough to make it viewable.
What do you have to do to an article to get it to appear?

New Joomla isn't as easy to get going as old Joomla, thats for sure!

Could I suggest that if you are doing a fresh install then there are two things that need to be considered.

1.7 is no longer supported and therefore you should be using the latest 2.5 LTS (currently 2.5.4)

Your template may just not be working properly in 1.7. Have you tried anything with a default template?

I was passing through 1.7 because there was a plugin that wasn't supported by 2.5 yet - it was mooted to come out soonish, so I was putting up the further upgrade until it was. Seemed reasonable at the time.

Hmm.. swapping to the default templates, the menus appear.
(How can a template not 'work'?!?)
Hokay, I wlll rework from one of these templates...

OK, I have rewritten the template from beez2.
I now have the menu appearing (yay!), but I'm getting way more than I want (boo!).
The line
<jdoc:include type="modules" name="position-7" style="beezDivision" headerLevel="3" />
gives the Main Menu, the About Joomla Block, This Site (which repeats the contents of the Main Menu) and the login block.
I only want the Main Menu!
Where is 'position-7' defined that I can adjust it? or a list of how the various types are implemented so I can pick a different one?
I can only find the original reference in the xml file, not anything that actually sets it up.

References to documentation that actually discusses this would also be appreciated for further reading - Google can't find it. :(
http://docs.joomla.org/Jdoc_statements really only delineates the syntax.
