I know this question has been asked before, about not being able to log in because the password's forgotten or corrupted or Joomla won't accept the login details.

But I can't even get to the point where I can type in my login details.

I'm not sure what happened behind the scenes, but I recovered my Joomla installation from a backup. And not everything seemed to be where it originally was. Everything was OK, except I couldn't get in to the administrator back end. So I thought I'd try to reinstall Joomla, but then it created a 'clean' empty website. And so I recovered the database from the backup again and uploaded the old configuration.php file - but still no administrator back end.

When I go to mywebsite.com/administrator, This is what I get:
Image

There is nowhere to enter the username/password information!!! :o

I've done some more searching, and did find a few other posts that deal with this same issue - but no solutions.

I also used the code files from a fresh install (administrator/modules/mod_login) and copied them into the original folder. But no change. I checked permissions, usually 755 for folders, 644 for files - changing them to 777 didn't make any difference.

Any ideas? Many thanks in advance,
gary

Have you tested another webbrowser or if you have not that emptied the cache of your browser. If this does not help you could also check if your Joomla files are changed with MD5 Comparison Tool, which is easy to install and use. Just takes 5 minutes.

Hi Slackervaara, thanks for your suggestions.
Yes, I did clear the cache AND I tried another browser.

The MD5 Comparison Tool was very useful. It showed up a whole bunch of files that were missing or altered. Some important-looking modules didn't seem to get copied back in from the backup folder. And, maybe not all the original files and folders got copied to the backup folder either!!! So that could explain the problem somewhat.

However, I don't know what version of Joomla I have (had). I know it was 1.15, but not sure which one. I tried each of the MD5 files from .22 to .26 and got different results. I then copied missing files from a fresh new install of 1.15.26, but that didn't make any difference.

Do you know how I can find out what version of Joomla I installed (without having to log into the admin panel of course LOL!)?

And what would I need to copy from a (separate) fresh install of Joomla to bring all my files up to date? It's worth giving that a try, because it does seem like something small but important is missing.

A further complication is that we introduced our own template, which we modified extensively, and installed a bunch of third-party components, like jdownloads, RSmembership, etc. etc. So it's difficult to know really what's missing.

The front end of the site seems to work absolutely fine, logging everybody in correctly, connecting to the external websites, displaying all the content and wrappers.

So it's very odd that just the administrator back end seems to have become corrupted or non-functional in some way.

Any other ideas?
Thanks again,
gary

You can find your version through looking in this file:
libraries/joomla/version.php

/** @var int Sub Release Level */
var $DEV_LEVEL = '26';

This is version 1.5.26

Thanks, that's very useful to know - takes out a lot of guesswork. I happen to have 1.5.22 and a *lot* of files seem to be missing and about 25 are listed as modifed or faulty in some way.

I am now in the process of installing a fresh copy from the original download file. And
I'll copy back the original files that are missing. Hopefully that will do the trick..! :) - will let y'all know.
