Hi,
I'm a complete newbie here. I have taken over the admin but I was not around during setup, so I'm trying to play catch up.

On the home page there are six boxes of varying sizes. I want them to look uniform, nice and neat but I can't find where to make the changes. I'm assuming that this is some sort of template.

Next, I am trying to take away links from the home page and put them on the specific titles.

What am I missing here?

Have you studied this guide which has a number of useful links: http://docs.joomla.org/Beginners

You could use the inspect function of the Firebug extension of the Firefox browser to find out which CSS elements set the height and width of the boxes. On the other hand, it is possible that those boxes are rendered in Custom HTML modules by inline styles, styling which is embedded in the HTML code. Viewing the HTML source code of your page would give some information from where the boxes originate.
