Joomla 2.5.6 on 123-reg - is it just me??!

So, erm, does anyone have Joomla 2.5.6 (or any version for that matter) running successfully on 123-reg hosting? Performance of late has been abysmal. I've been sent 'round the houses with support and, to be fair, I have no idea if it's me or them to blame.

It's an out of the box installation, I'm using the default theme, pretty much no customisation beyond that. Performance is terrible. Sometimes taking 1 minute+ for a single page (with only text content) to load. Caching is disabled as per 123-reg's request, but then it was disabled out of the box anyway.

I'm now being told by support that it's related to these errors they're seeing, database connections being exceeded and connections to the db not being closed properly by Joomla:-

Sometimes it works fine, sometimes pages take an age to load, sometimes they don't load at all and I get 500 Internal Server Errors. I would have thought if it was a problem at my end (i.e. corrupt files / problems with db connections) then I'd experience more consistent issues - i.e. a file is either corrupt or it's not, so it would either work or not work. Really can't see file corruption being to blame.

Any ideas?

You have nor renamed htaccess.txt to .htaccess

Hi - thanks for the info! Appreciated. I've sorted the .htaccess file and I really can't see how the permissions point would cause the problems I'm experiencing. I don't think I can do anything about the Memory Limit issue.

123-reg are now coming back and blaming my internet connection, which is an absolute joke. I'm getting 500 Internal Server Errors generated by their servers! Hmm...
