SEF Url Madness

Post by whycali » Sun Nov 04, 2012 8:22 pm

How can I make sure that missing pages, with SEF urls get 404? Some, now get another page entirely, some are getting 500 errors.

I've reorganized content and manually migrated from Mambo through Joomla 1, 1.5, 1.6, 2.5 and soon 3.0. Article numbers have changes and so have the urls. In most cases when someone comes in using an old link, they get a 404 page. But in many cases they get another page entirely or even a 500 error.

Here are a couple examples:

Old Link - 500 error (says 400, but the header is a 500): http://www.psmonopoly.com/downloads/win ... k.go&id=16

New Link - working properly:
http://www.psmonopoly.com/download-mono ... k.go&id=16

Old Link - Showing wrong page, should show 404 error:
http://www.psmonopoly.com/web-links/37- ... opoly-game

There are many like the last one, which (because the article numbers have changed) show article #37 (whatever it is, instead of a 404 code).

I just rebuilt the menus, but I'm still having the same issue. I noticed that this link:

http://www.psmonopoly.com/web-links/37- ... opoly-game

includes "80" in the URL, so Joomla is showing article ID=80. It's not the article that used to be at that url (in the 1.5 site).

Looking over Google Webmaster tools, I'm showing 500 errors on all bad links to the "weblinks" component and the "feeds" component. Those bad links should be returning a 400 error.

I've tried adding redirects for these links and htaccess redirects, but these pages are still either displaying articles which match the old article id OR 500 errors.

Is there any way around this (other than changing my article numbers)?

Mike

If you site has internal page links, you will probably have to relink those. Not sure how well things come over from mambo.

The Mambo upgrade was years ago. The most recent migration was from Joomla 1.6 to 2.5.

The issue appears to be the way Joomla does SEF. It appears to pull the article number out of the URL, independent of the article's alias. So, using demo content as an example, there is an unlimited number of urls one could build to point to the same content.

Take a Joomla! 2.5 install with demo content and try these:

http://localhost/using-joomla/extension ... fessionals[/b]

http://localhost/35-something-else

http://localhost/some-random-path/35-garbage

Joomla will ignore pretty much everything in the url other than the number. As long as "35" appears appears at the start of the last bit of the url, Joomla will show you article 35. Is there no way around this?

Best,

Mike

@whycali Did you ever find a solution for this sef issue in Joomla! 3.x ? Having the same issue on a site at the moment and the only way to get a SEF url for an article seems to be the adding of this article to the menu and this is not done on the fly..
