Joomla creates unwanted url's

It still confuses me that joomla still creates duplicate urls etc even though everything is tagged to a menu item .
eg. i have a menu item linked to a SINGLE ARTICLE
Which is what i want.
yet it stills comes up under the cat or an id in sef also.
eg
I have an article linked to a dedicated menu item ( which i thought does away with any dupes )
My menu item would be like
http://mysite.com/festival-of-sails
Yet after some searching i find it's coming up at other places ugh....
Like
http://mysite.com/11-articles/52-festival-of-sails

Please teach me up on getting rid of these rogue urls.
