As a component developer, what are my translation options?
I develop a small number of free extensions. I have previously not worried about translations but feel I should be doing something to support users of other languages. But I also want to keep my management overhead low.
So, I started experimenting and asking around. I have found, so found:
1. That pasting an INI file into Google Translate technically works, but the quality of the result is questionable.
2. Google Translation Toolkit does not seem to be an option.
3. Transifex seems to present a "reasonable" online, collaborative solution.
Now, I'm sure Transifex has pros and cons, and I don't necessarily want to have that discussion. What I do want to know is if I choose to use Transifex because it suits "me" as the developer of "my" extensions, is the TT community interested in putting up an official group for me to join with (it's called outsourcing in Transifex I think)? At the moment, the only option I have is Open Translators. It's nothing personal, but I would prefer to use an official channel if one exists.
So, to put the question simply, has the TT community looked at putting an "official" translation group on Transifex (sorry if I'm using the wrong terminology)?
Or, is there a better online, collaborative solution that an extension developer can use (and, if so, is that one supported by the TT's as well)?
Thanks in advance.

Re: As a component developer, what are my translation option
I have my doubts about those options, fueled mostly by the calls I see on nearly all 3rd party extension developer's sites for translation help.
Don't HACK the Joomla! core, Instead "Extend" and/or "Override."
Stay ON the update path.

Re: As a component developer, what are my translation option
Andrew,
the point is not so much the method used (online collaborative or not) but the quality of the work provided by the translator(s) i.e. the control one has over the quality (which OT has not).
We recently found out that webtranslateit.com had less flaws than transifex technically.
The owner of this site will let any GPL get there freely (ask by mail).
Then, it is just a matter for you to create your project(s) by uploading there your en-GB.whatever.ini and then find translators you can trust to allow them access to the language variant.
If these translators are also TTs, then you can be sure the quality will be constant (at least for most of them).
The TT coordination per se does not provide a central place for TT to translate core as this is up to each Team to decide the way they collaborate (and on which state of core). Some use Github, some use SVN, a few use a specific independent project on transifex, many just use a good old TextEditor).
It is evidently even more true concerning 3pd files.
As all are volunteers, the only way for you to get translators for your extensions is ask for volunteers.
FYI, before these online translation tools existed, the TTs were themselves providing to 3pd lang files, depending on their availability and interest in the extensions provided. Also they used to provide on their community sites such customized extensions.
Some still do.
As TT coordination though, we can forward to the TTs any specific request from any 3pd by posting them in the TT forum once posted here.
Hope this helps.

Re: As a component developer, what are my translation option
Hi JM. Thanks - I'll try out webtranslateit.com
In terms of finding people to help me translate my extensions (or for any other extension developer), what do you recommend is the best way to do that?

Re: As a component developer, what are my translation option
I suggest, as soon as your project is available to translate, for example on webtranslateit.com, to create a new topic in this forum with a call here to Translators containing a link to the extensions concerned on JED (forum rules) so that any volunteer may first see what they are up to.
As I wrote above, we will forward this call of yours in the TT forum.
In the mean while, I am thinking that we should create a specific sub-forum here for such calls from 3pd and ask our TTs to subscribe to it. I will discuss this with fellow Global Mods.

As a translator that has used several online tools and the old days text editors too, masterchief wrote: Or, is there a better online, collaborative solution that an extension developer can use?
For me, now, its Transifex. WTI looks better but regular translators prefer to use Transifex
Transifex is the tool best suitable for the collaboration part on my recommended translation workflow for translators (see
https://sites.google.com/site/transjoom ... n-workflow )
It also allows the creation of autopacking and distribution using the joomla extension CTransifex (or other script).
As for use or not outsourced teams you can have your own teams and total control.
Sometimes its the best option . See here: https://sites.google.com/site/transjoom ... management
If you want to use Transifex I can set up for you a project. Send PM or Skype me.

Re: As a component developer, what are my translation option
You find projects to translate (i've a list with more then 540 ... see Transfomifex at my tutorial site)divaneh wrote:hi horus_68

You join your language team on each project you want to translate (or request a new team if there is none)
You translate online (really easy).
You can download translations anytime. (I've also a list with more then 90 projects that have automatic language packs.
You find it all here in my tutorials:

Re: As a component developer, what are my translation option
In my opinion webtranslateit.com is a better online tool than transifex (have used both pretty much). One thing i really need is the possibillity to search alle ini files in a project for a specific string - that is possible on webtranslateit - i have not found that option in transifex - but maybe I'm wrong here ? It helps me find errors in a project with many files a lot faster.

Re: As a component developer, what are my translation option
Transifex allows that too. You can even work with a single file (as in a merge of all your resources)!rbuelund wrote:One thing i really need is the possibillity to search alle ini files in a project for a specific string
True.. this is an almost hidden feature in the new editor!
1- Enter the file you want to translate on your language
2- Under search box click the left arrow next to your actual file name
3- You have now a list with all resources
4- At the bottom you find a link to "All resources". Click that link.
5- Now you have a combined file with all strings on different resources
You can now search / filter by text, original text, translated text, translators name, translated since, updated since, and so on!
Have fun!
