but from my exp. with joomla so far..i think dynamic fonts are not supported!
You are not right with Joomla and Dynamic fonts. Also you didnt search the forum.
Here is a thread:
http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,66507.0.html

Joomla has nothing to do with fonts let alone dynamic fonts.

set the fonts in the template of your choice, be it dynamic, bitstream or anything you like.

mod note :  topic split from Malayalam Translation topic to here since it has got nothing to do with bug fixing and testing the malayalam translation pack. Feel free to discuss about Joomla and dynamic fonts as much as you can here.. Thanks

Joomla and Dynamic Fonts

I agree that dynamic font might *work* with joomla but what I was thinking was limitations of dynamic fonts. Doesn't then all the client need to have that particulat dynamic font? If yes, then it defeats the purpose of being user friendly...as I would prefer that the client does not have to install anything....

I believe I need to do some research on dynamic fonts, but from my whatever understanding, using UTF font is far better than using dynamic font and they are things of past and from old school.

Joomla and Dynamic Fonts

Post by alamgir99 » Sun Oct 29, 2006 11:29 pm

@romit
I am against Dynamic fonts. But what I meant is Dynamic fonts do work with Joomla.
Malayalam site uses standard OTF, i can see. Thats good.

@Vish
It works with Joomla. As I said, you have to write a template in that way.

Dynamic fonts are for Viewing only and works only with  IE. The client doesnt need to have the font installed. The downsides are obvious: no text input, editing of existing text, not FF or Opera viewable and no PDF too.

Yet some uses it for Win98 people where OTF/Unicode dont exist in full.

My view: no dynamic font as with you.

yeah!

i agree. theoretically UNICODE is one wonderfull standardised font method.

but in practice,
in languages like malayalam were we have more than 50 alphabets and
and requires a lot more  because of its property of combining alphabets.

as of now no unicode malayalam font is no where close to matching the quality of a daynamic font like 'matweb'.

as for UNICODE- i must say, they are still pathetic. the best in lot is (i think) anjalioldlipi.
i dont if we can do anything abt this!!

but yes for
joomla! malayalam
we will continue to use unicode.

Sunil

That is a very interesting information you got there. I did not know that there are no good UNICODE font out there for Malyalam...
That is very unfortunate but I see an opportunity there. Is it too difficult to convert a dynamic font into a UNICODE font !! I wonder...

From what I hear Vish it is extremely difficult / time consuming to perfectly convert a dynamic font to unicode..

may b vish didnt mean converting as such.
but using the existing font style with unicode.
yes! thats possible.

but the catch is that...

UNICODE is a universal standard. and u ll first require the std's commttie to decide and standardise the
font (/alphabet) locations in the font. (bcose every alphabet is represented as a hexadecimal digit in the font. and all unicde fonts should follow this.) as of now the std's set for malayalam are quite insufficient for representing all alphabets (or koottakshrangal as we call it in malayalam).

may be the new version of unicode std'd will accomodate all these possibilities! (thay should have actually modelled an existing dynamic font like matweb for creating the standard !)

i have some glad news for the forum !

The kerala Govt. and academician are working on a new Unicode std. for Malayalam.
Although as of now it looks naive im sure they are working hard on it.
and We will soon have a new and complete Unicode std set for Malayalam.

@Vish and Romit

would it mean that our old version of Joomla would stop working after the new standard is set ?

Unicode consortium is the body who develops and ratifies the unicode standard. Indian government (not a state government) can demand one or more additions to the existing standard, but Unicode consortium will NEVER alter an assigned code or change a code point. It only adds new symbol if the demand from respective government is strong.

So I don't believe a state government can develop a standard for unicode. It must be something else.

Its got nothing to do with the govt. as such. its a group of academicians in kerala who are working on Modifying and improving the Malayalam Unicode std.
When hit a roadblock some other people approached the CM to interfere in the matter and Setup a proper body for such an important task.

the rat race is still on. is what i heard..
