Are you having problems upgrading your website? If so, you will get better assistance by posting in the Upgrade forum, http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/board,36.0.html.
Anything you can do to clarify your situation will get you better results. Including your products (like you did) is great. Add in version information and also what you are trying to do (exactly - step by step) and what is not working or what you do not understand.
If it is just as simple as - what do I do to upgrade to the newest release? check
Ok - give it a try. If you don't get an answer within a day, or so, email me and I will try to help!
Good luck! You WILL get there!

I just looked at powweb. They have an install script for joomla. I think that would get you started if you haven't used joomla.

I found this link which is to a Step by Step guide to Joomla http://www.screenbooks.net/joomla
If it has been posted here somewhere before then I apologize, but it’s such an excellent "How to on Joomla” that the or :-* that created it should receive a Joomla Medal.
Take care

Re: DISCUSSION: Absolute beginner using Joomla--Getting Started Suggestions
I'm reading the:
http://www.netshinesoftware.com/joomla-tutorial.html > . This is an easy to read, 20-page manual that gets right to the heart of the matter.
right now and just following along, however, now that I'm at the menu section (figures 17 and 18) I'm a little confused. I understand the whole Section, Category and Content idea. And I followed along and this is what I did:
Section: About the artist
Category: Discography
Content Item: Album 1
per the instructions up to where I am now. When I create menus, I am picturing "About the artist" on the main menu. When someone clicks that, it should open up another menu with all the different categories under that section like Discography, Biography, etc.
Am I understanding that right? Because under the menu manager, I don't see how you create an item on the main menu that links to a category menu. This makes me think I have the concept wrong.. Please advise? I don't want to go past this step because I'm a total beginner and I really want to learn Joomla for my site =)
Edit:
Or are "sections" meant only for the backend? Meaning on my main menu, I should have only category names that link directly to the content items in those categories?

Re: DISCUSSION: Absolute beginner using Joomla--Getting Started Suggestions
Hi all,
I'm a rookie. I don't do site design at all but, my friend got me started with my site for my business with a template and gave me the user manual to read. I then began to add all of the sections, categories, content etc. He set up the banner that's on top: 'luxembourg family chiropractic' with all the pictures.
Now I'm trying to change the template that he's used- i've uploaded/installed templates and i can assign things and everything but I can't figure out how to change the text. ie. when i put in the new template, the banner reads 'Company name here' and just under something else. I'd obviously like to change that to the name of my practice but i'm looking and reading and reading.....and can't figure out how to do it- both in the administration panel or by reading forums. I'm sure it's something simple but could someone please let me in on the secret.. thanks so much and I apologize if this is an inappropriate message for this forum. In case it helps, my site is: http://www.luxchiro.com
thanks,
scott

Re: DISCUSSION: Absolute beginner using Joomla--Getting Started Suggestions
Hi. As a complete beginner to Joomla I am completely lost.
I was looking through the documentation, and all the admin panels, but I can't figure out how to make some (what I think are) simple changes to the front page, such as turning off different "blocks" that are there by default, such as "advertisement" and "newsflash" and "latest news" and "popular".
Do I have to go into some .php file template and modify it there?
Thanks,
doug

Re: DISCUSSION: Absolute beginner using Joomla--Getting Started Suggestions
Hi all - first of all...great site!
Just 'discovered' Joomla - its seems to be everything I want (my first project is for my church's website).
One quick (and probably dumb) question... can I create a website on my own webspace, and then once I am happy with it, transfer it to the proper webspace with its own domain name etc.? If so, how and is it difficult
I am sure it won't be the only question...but just to get me started :P
Thanks in advance
Spence

There's a link on installing joomla 1.5 in that beginners post. I could only find a 1.0 on the download page. Is there a 1.5 package I should be looking for?

1.0.12 is the latest stable release.
1.5 is in beta status and not meant for production or live sites. You can download nightly builds from this page: http://dev.joomla.org/content/view/17/60/

The link to Russ Winter's Joomla! HISA: Health Installation and Security Audit Tool on the Absolute Beginners Guide to Joomla! (updated) « on: March 18, 2006, 11:53:21 AM »
is not working.
Where can I find a tool to check if my website host server is "ready for Joomla" . ?

Re: DISCUSSION: Absolute beginner using Joomla--Getting Started Suggestions
Thanks MMMedia & RobInk for the quick response.
You have posted a link to Russ Winter's Joomla! HISA http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/hisa/ .
This link resides on the site joomlacode.org . I had to register on that forum as well just to access the link.
I find that the forum says
# this is an Open Source resource ....
# this is a developer resource for Open Source code ... it is not for commercial projects, non-code projects (ie: it is not a file hosting facility)
Could there be a more appropriate way to access useful files by new users of joomla than to access a forum which says its not a "file hosting facility" ?

Re: DISCUSSION: Absolute beginner using Joomla--Getting Started Suggestions
I think you must be clicking on the wrong link. I just went there I am not logged in or registered and I could download just fine.
You go to the HISA main page. You think click on the tab FILES. You then click on the zip file you wish to download.
http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/hisa/frs/ <---that is a link to the FILES tab.
You do not have to register at joomlacode to download files. That is not a forum, it is a source code forge. It is a place for developers that are working on free GPL licensed code to have their code, track bugs, and communicate with people that may have code fixes.
It is user friendly. It is not a file hosting facility. It is a place where coders can keep and work on their source code and distribute their files to end users.
