I am redeveloping an exisiting web site which currently runs on a Windows server and has a phpBB forum running under SQL. When the Joomla site goes live, I want to integrate the forum using the Joomla Forum Component and switch the hosting to a Linux server running MySQL.

The SQL database side of things is definitely alien territory for me, but I'm keen to find out if I can transfer all of my existing forum users and content from phpBB to a Joomla forum and whether this can be done by a relative novice.

Any advice (even if it's, 'DO NOT GO THERE!') would be appreciated, along with a few plain English guidelines.

I like the joomlaboard, but one thing I should warn you about is that it is not very secure and if you want to have private forums (others might be able to access them anonymously (unless there is some kind of a fix to this that I do not know about).

I don't have a link offhand, but you can replicate the problem on your own joomla installation. Do the following:

1. Install Joomlaboard
2. Make two forum topics, one public and one private for registered only.
3. Go to your website and visit your joomlaboard as a guest (logged out)
4. You should only see the guest topic, click on it.
5. Look at the browser address and notice at the end there is a number 1 or 2...
6. Change it to a different number, try 2, 3, 4...
7. You now are looking at the PRIVATE forum as a GUEST.

I really wish this did not exist as overall I like Joomlaboard, but for now I am sticking with the phpBB/Joomla bridge by Mehdi.

Still playing around with it, will post in a few minutes my little research :p
I see that there is a new version 1.1.5, did not try this one before.

I tried again and reproduced it, what I noticed is that sometimes when you uninstall joomlaboard (tried 1.1.4 and 1.1.5 beta) it leaves the entries in the database, thus when you reinstall a new one those entries conflict with any new settings you might have, as in permissions. You can fix this by, uninstalling the component, then removing the jos_sb entries from the database and then reinstalling the component.

Some other bugs I found while I was playing around with it:
1. When looking at a thread there is a button on top "Post Reply", when you hit it, it does not automatically fill in the subject line thus your reply creates a completely new topic.
2. I tested on IE 6 and FireFox 1.5 (forgot to download 2.0), when creating a postthe only buttons that work are post and cancel, preview, bold, etc...do not work (could be my template, so check if this happens on your site).

Sorry, I should have been more specific. The forum extension I am using is Fireboard, not Joomlaboard.

Anyone got any thoughts on the importing from phpBB2 problem?

Just a final word on this issue: It is possible to import a phpBB2 database into Fireboard. I managed to get it done, with the help of a database specialist who was able to convert the phpBB schema and import it into the Joomla 1.5 database.

This not only saved all the existing posts from the phpBB board, but also brought across all the user details. So the whole Joomla site, including Fireboard was able to launch with all the original user registrations intact.

I don't have full details on how the data was converted, since this was a piece of work which we paid for, but if anyone needs a similar translation, I'd be happy to pass on the contact details of the guy that did the work (assuming he agrees).
