How Do I Change the Number of Articles or Number of Columns on the Front Page?

The number of news columns on the front page, along with the number of articles shows on the front page, is actually not a templates question.  There are front page parameters set in the admin area of your website which controls this.  But it is in a non-obvious place to find.  At least it is hard to find in Joomla 1.0.11.

Note: On the default installation of Joomla!, the frontpage is linked from the Home link on the main menu. If you have it linked from another place, change the procedure below accordingly.

On your admin site, go to Menu > "mainmenu", then click on the Home menu item.  In the Parameters column on the right, there are entries for:

# Leading (defaults to 1)
# Intros (defaults to 2)
Columns (defaults to 2)

The total number of articles shown in the main body is the number of leading plus the number of intros.  Columns only apply to the intros.
