Drupal is THRASHING us at OSCMS - Where are our guru's!

Post by masterchief » Thu Feb 15, 2007 4:53 am

This should go in Events I know, but this is embarrasing  :-[.

http://2007.oscms-summit.org/
http://2007.oscms-summit.org/session_submissions
We currently have a call for sessions until Friday, February 16, 2007!
TIME IS RUNNING OUT

We are getting *thrashed* people; *thrashed* by the Drupal mania! (and I mean that in the nicest and touchy-feely possible way).  Version 5.0 has surely gone to their head (I have decided to wear my honourary scary-face Drupal T-shirt inside-out in protest).

I wish I could do something myself but my time is booked to help out with some other things.

BUT!  If you have something that you could write up and you think would be of interest to other people, by golly submit a proposal and let's up the ante a bit!  Ra-ra-ra and all that.  You don't have to write it yet, just submit the ideas.

You don't need to be officially endorsed to do this.  You don't need to wait for a majestic smoke signal from on high.  You don't need permission from OSM.  You don't need permission from the Core Team, the Working Groups, your mother (well, ok, maybe you do if you are under 13 yrs old) and you certainly don't need my permission to do it.  If you love Joomla! and have something to crow about then have a go.

Conferences are a lot of fun and a real buzz to meet other crazy Open Source geeks and groupies.

Let's give Drupal a run for their money in the voting for final papers!

As an aside I have to say I've been over at the Drupal site and there seems to be a concerted effort to spread the word... lot's of 'digg'ing and all that... plus this is the first I've heard about OSCMS... Maybe Joomla could start doing a little more of that same shameless self-promotion?

Can someone not suggest a "migration to Joomla CMS" talk? Joomla is simple to use 'as-is' out of the box and there's lots of new sites out there, but if I were going to Sunny CA I'd like to see a talk on shifting bigger business sites across and keeping them ticking over... that way the concept of thinking big and all the top pro development would push Joomla forward and maybe provide better tools for the lower level users?

Just thinking aloud :)

Agreed - Drupal is organizing a concerted publicity push - once a week they seem to get an official announcement on the Digg frontpage.

http://2007.oscms-summit.org/session_submissions/Drupal. Around 40 sessions

http://2007.oscms-summit.org/session_su ... /Joomla%21. Only 2, one run by someone from CiviCRM.

It's a free conference sponsored by Yahoo. Who do we have nearby Sunnyvale, California willing to do a presentation?

One thing that would be awesome would be to show how to take a template from here --> http://www.opendesigns.org/ and demonstrate how to EASILY mark it up for Joomla! and install it and wa-la! That is a KEY strength for Joomla! and could EASILY be an hour or two hour presentation.

Heck - just insert an image into an article and the Drupal folks will fall of their chairs.  ;) (that was naughty, sorry! I am just teasing. Drupal has LOTS of strengths, images are just not one of them.)

Another KEY KEY KEY strength of Joomla! is the Extensions library. Another EXCELLENT session would be demonstrating how to peruse the vast set of choices available and show how that site works. It is so awesome. Then how to download, install, configure, and WA-LA. Then, return and provide feedback, etc. Again, this could be an entire hour presentation and would be very good to share with the other projects - a KEY strength of Joomla!. Shouldn't be too difficult to demo.

Getting geekier - The new Model View Controller Application Architecture - talk about it from a purely technical standpoint - how it works. Tear apart the links component from the Administrator side of things to the end user front end. That would be VERY COOL for own of our developers to do. It could be purely screen shots and power point but I am quite certain that would draw a good crowd.

Authentication - OpenID, LDAP, a third party tool, again, screen shots and examples on how to integrate in your own security environments.

Joomla.org - it would be very good to have a presentation on our organizational structure - the core team - who these people are, where they live, what they do, all of the working groups and their role, how they communicate, the joomla.org family of sites - what each one is for, stats on usage and dreams for the future. That is a good hour and would be awesome for each of the CMSs to share organizational information. We could learn so much from one another.

We've only got until tomorrow (Friday). I hope we have people going. Next year, we need to set goals and drive attendance up on this. I think even more than having our "own" conference, meeting with the other OSCMSs is excellent because we are the ones who can help one another.

Andrew - you rock. Thanks for this!

I just want to say that I do love the Drupal project and have an enormous respect for them and what they have achieved.  I just happen to think they should have a bit of healthy rivalry at the conference, that's all :)

You don't have to write dev topics, end-user or biz stuff is just as valuable.  If you've got a business, and have a great system for taking a client's designs through to launch and followed by training, the brag about it - everyone can learn from that.  If you've got great support systems (oh I desperately want to write a paper on using SVN and Phing - people, you have now idea how powerful that is) then share it because people from other projects will also benefit.  A  paper on "How to make a business out of Open Source software - Joomla! a case study (aka How not to get sued by people that have no idea about collaborative development)" I'm sure would be well received.

Anyway, enough cheer leading for now (this skirt is really starting to bite into my waist).  Just think about having a go.  You might surprise yourself :)

The trip to Sunnyvale is my problem... I do web development BECAUSE I can do it from here at our little ranch.  You want to pay for my plane ticket AND a caretaker for the horses ... I'm all set.

I would love to give the seminar, no problem.

It will be great fun! Especially when the presentation part is done!  :P

I am very much looking forward to meeting you all in person.

Hagen - I will check out that template - thanks! In one hours time, I will only be able to cover the basics but pointing out these types of resources is a great idea!

Amy :)

Looks like they're still accepting session suggestions for the moment. If they're still considering them, I've thrown in my idea.

It's much warmer in California, Joe, than where you and I are at right now!

Thanks so much for joining us and presenting on behalf of Joomla!
