shoutbox announcer discussion

Post by steve-o-meter » Tue Apr 24, 2007 5:15 pm

I am setting this forum up as a place for people to discuss the Shoutbox Announcer.

The Shoutbox Announcer updates will be discussed here instead of steve-o-meter site

Version history
  • 1.0 - Login & Logout announced
  • 2.0 - Streamlined code
  • 2.1 - Added announce on Avatar and Profile change
  • 2.2 - In development
The announcer will work with any shoutbox that uses #__shoutbox database....

I will be attempting to contact shoutbox authors in an attempt to develop it to another level.

If you have any suggestions/problems report them here!

Thank you Steve I love the announcer plugin. I'm in the middle of reviewing all the com, mods and bits I use. Announcer is one of the gems I have found.

will announcer announce scores like on your site?

Is it difficult to add functions like cb-fireboard new post/reply? Not actually asking you to drop everything and do this. I'm as much interested in the process as the end result

I have a few more possibilites but I'll wait for a response to these first

To make COM_Fireboard announce new posts apply the following hack:

replace /components/com_fireboard/templates/default/post.php with attached file

Post any other integration requests, but remember that i can only make hacks for GNU/GPL components

That worked a treat: Fast response, fast implementation !!!!! :pop

I wonder would "The Best of Joomla" add your hack as an option in their next Fireboard  release.

Announcer compatibility is one of those little options that so many components could benefit. Excellent idea Man.

Already I have a few different authors working on integration.

PUarcade is one with integration included in next version.

Here's a few for ya!

1) Timed announcements with link option obviously admin from back end
eg  System: It is now 6 o clock: Here is a summary of todays news

2) Ability to change name of system  from back end eg:  DJ 2000: Techbot has just logged in

3) integration with a random quote module :)

4) Integration with Sobi and Docman and every other components that allows a user to submit an item  :-*

5) integration with Newsflash

Would a psuedo community builder account be needed to accommodate the above.

Anybody got any more?

Have no doubt folks this plugin is a community builder/ shoutbox  must have.

i think those are great ideas

1) i think i will have to make it a component to do that

2) will be easily done on next release

3) what exactly should it do here?

4) i would need to make hacks for each component you want announcing

5) announce on new newsflash item?

im gonna work on these ideas.

i think im going to rewrite this so that it is a component, then the cb plugin and hacks will all be diff options.

Now that i can pass params, i went ahead and made more options.

New in version 3.0:

Admin side config in plugin config for:
Text to use in announcement
Which events to announce for including:
  • Logout
  • New User
  • Connection Accept
  • Connection Reject
  • Connection Remove
  • Profile Update
  • Avatar Change
3.0 is available in joomla directory.

Worked like a charm.

Only now do I realise the full potential of GNU/GPL. I already thought of a few more candidates for announcing, but they are commercial products so forget them.

Completely Off topic Question: How tied down to the one shoutbox is the announcer, I've notice a few more shoutboxes and was wondering if it is easy to modify it for othes either as options within the module or other releases. Just an idle thought nothing more.

It might be worth taking a look at SOBI2. It has CB integration is on the up and up and is probably the best candidate for announcer.

i assume you want it to announce when a user makes a new post.... do you also want any other events in that software announced?

i am going to contact them and see if they want to help, or if im going to just have to relase a hacked version...

Is there any way that when a user returns to the site (having previously ticked "remember me") that SA can announce that they have returned?
Same goes for leaving the site, so it says "left the site" if they do not physically log off.

It appears at the moment as though it only announces when someone logs on or off but not when they return to or leave the site.

i have been working on a whole new thing, it will be a module that will take over the login process for smf, cb or core joomla and will do all kinds of fancy magic, and will do just like what your asking.

i agree, a remembered user should be announced also, right now it just triggers off cb events, but the new version 4 will be a total rewrite (skipping a # in case the cb plugin forks.)

Thanks steve-o

The reason I asked about it was that I was using whosonlineXT so people could see who came an went without having to refresh the page, however, it tends to throw up an "operation aborted" error every so often.

I now use Live Users Pro, but you have to refresh the page every now and then.

Having SA cover off the "return" and "leave" scenarios will mean that that can appear in SMO Shoutbox, which appears on all pages on the site and there will be no need to refresh the whole damn page.

Love your work....

Colin.

im basically going to be making combination of live users, cb/smf/joomla login and shoutbox announcer in one module....

you still will need to have the plugin installed, but the module would 'refresh' and get new data every (x) seconds.

ill be on this project this week. do you do any css or anything like that?

missing a $params=this->params line on those last 2 functions

new version being assembled now to be uploaded for last ver 3 release (3.2)

version 4 will go out all at once.

OK. please post here if possible when its updated.

One important feature request for me: Make the usernames linked to their cb profiles, or atleast give the option - I believe this is very easy to do?

the 4.0 and greater versions will have better link capabilities

Login action doesn't seem to be working. I'm just curious if anyone else has seen this? Logout shows but login doesn't appear to post to the shoutbox.

We are also working on our dcsFlashGames 2.0 joomla arcade. The new 2.0 has an integration to the SMO Ajax Shoutbox!

You can see it running on our site.

*bumping*
No thoughts on this...c'mon SoM, what gives?  There's no docs or anything on your work, I would have expected more.

It seems like a good idea, but it just doesn't work. I've been through all the admin settings, maybe something in your code isn't honoring a config parameter?
Maybe I'm not on the most current version?
Maybe a conflict of Shoutbox/cb/plugin?

I'll take a look at the code for your plugin. If I fix it up, I'll send you a copy if you want it?  In the meantime you can see how it's acting on http://eKith.com

Thanks!

:-[ sorry for the goof and lack of reaction on my part

i believe there has to be something to it... it may be possible your system isn't triggering the onAfterLogin routine?

if its set to onBeforeLogin it will annoucne every login attempt

im gonna take a peek and look at the code i have available for download right now (tues near midnight eastern)
