Poll for the new CMS name

Post by Ambient » Thu Aug 18, 2005 7:55 am

Hi guys and gals,

Wouldn't it be nice if the community could vote for the new name of this project ?
Having something like 5-10 names to choose from.

Tango, which was originally suggested to me for my Project Orange fork.

I've found a better name for the Orange fork, so you guys have my blessing  :)

Freed

It has many implications and works on many different levels. The more that I think about it the more that I am impressed with its possibilities.

I'm sorry for all of those with domainnames like mambosolutions, mamboos ect.
With a new name for mambo, those websites would have to change as well. But hey - thanks miro!  >:(

Saw the mention of 'mutiny' on another thread which brought the idea of..

BOUNTY CMS (as in Mutiny on the Bounty).  A bounty is also something rich which everyone is eager to get.

It's also the name of a lovely bar of chocolate here in the UK.  That's totally irrelevant though.

Yeah but registering a new domain isn't that expensive...
Some extra work with transfering the site etc...

Why can't we go back to the name we used a year ago: Mambo Open Source?
  • It's name is well known
  • There's no need for everyone to change domain names
  • It hase OPEN SOURCE in it
Just a suggestion...

Nope, it's The Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything. Good neme for The CMS formerly known as Mambo, don't you think?

I've always preferred Sporks to Forks.

Hehe.

As for a name... Well, I reckon that's a biggie and there should be a period of discussion and then possibly a competition or some such... I think that's how the mambo flower (asterisk) was chosen?

As i reflect on the past year or so, and all that has  happened, I cant help but believe that there was something behind the decision of Mambo Open Source project  to drop the ' Open Source' from the name; changing it to 'Mambo'. If I recall the reasoning was to lessen confusion between MOS and Miro's commercial Mambo CMS (which later was renamed to Jango).

Hmm. If it is legal, i think it would be pretty satisfying and ironic if 'our' project was now re- renamed to its orignal name, Mambo Open Source. For reasons stated in previous posts, it makes sense.

Question is, does Miro own copyright on the name ' Mambo Open Source' ?  Or just on the name 'Mambo' ?

Doesn't matter, "Mambo" is in "Mambo Open Source".

In the same way you can't name a new software product Microsoft Windows Open Source, or something like that.

OSM can be a name...

But I don't think you should choose a name this fast. Maybe you need some time to get 50 or 100 names from the community and then narrow this down.

IMHO...  We should not use anything close to Mambo.  While there is value in that word and it's really well known, we do not want to create confusion.  We do not want people to chose Mambo when they were trying to get "ours", if it were named Mambo Open Source or some such.

A clean break is important in terms of name.

For this reason, any references to dances should be ousted.  Particularly Tango, because of Miro's Jango (and I say this with great reluctance since I *really* love Argentinian Tango... :) ).

I like a few of the suggestions, but we have to think long term.  Not just pick a name as a knee jerk reaction.  For instance, on first look, "Freed" sounds good, but will it mean anything a year or two down the road, when people coming to the CMS will have no idea of the history behind it?  Same goes for Mutiny, which I really like, but I dont' think it would stand the test of time.

OSM is kinda catchy.

But I'm sure the Core Dev has put some thoughts into this and I'd be interested to hear from them, when they are ready and have some time to invest in this aspect of the project :)

I understand how Freed could be interpreted as a knee jerk reaction. That's why I have pointed out that it can be interpreted in many different ways. I desire the name to reflect its musical heritage and the ability of this project to remove the gatekeeper paradigm of the Internet as we knew it.

Mombo Jambo..hehe....reminds me of a older song by Mr. President.... ;D

I would really like to see Mambo open source, because it´s already known, but also thinking of all the sites, that are using Mambo in their domain names, yes me included..but having said that, i wouldn´t mind changing my domain name at a later stage.

I think this thread should run for some time and there shouldn't be any haste over choosing a name.
However, that said, I want to offer my 0.02c worth :)

How about Mamber?  Mambo afficionados have long been calling themselves, "Mambers" and the name has come to signify "a member of the Mambo community".  What have we here, if not the community?

One part of me agrees that there should be a complete break from anything that appears to reference Mambo, but the other part says, why should we?  Mambo has won prestigious awards, thanks to the dev team, and it is the same group of people who have brought Mambo to where it is today that are continuing the development.

Hmmph, I didn't think this far enough...
If the dev team makes a poll out of this issue then some people might just go ahead and register variety of domains just for the fun of it according to the list of options in the poll.
So, what has already happened in this thread, people are posting ideas for the new name and perhaps the dev team will choose one in the near future...

Anyway I kinda like the OSM as well.

*I* don't have a problem with that, but...  Mambo is trademarked...  For some unfathomable reason, I would not be surprised in the least if all of you owning a domain name with Mambo in it wouldn't soon receive a letter from the Mambo Foundation with a cease & desist warning...

Yes, i wouldnt be surprised either, but then again, i wouldnt mind spending those few bucks, to change the name, if it means me taking a stand and backing up the community and the Core dev Team.
