As SMF is not licensed under GPL or a compatible license, you will need to make sure that the bridge does not contain any SMF derived code, if it does then Joomlahacks has violated the GPL, because the bridge will contain SMF licensed code re-licensed under the GPL, you cannot relicense code in this way as any SMF derived code contained in the bridge will become infected with the GPL.

I would suggest that you look for a GPL forum, especially in light of the fact that Joomla wants all extensions to be licensed under the GPL.

@lobos
I am perfectly aware of Joomla and SMF licenses differences as well as bridge issues.  ;)

I am no coder, the reason I ask here for an expert coder in legal team if he could check that specific bridge.

infograf768,

Yes this is an excellent idea, in light of recent events one must be very careful about utilising bridge type solutions. If both applications are GPL there is no problem, but if the licenses are different there is likely to be problems unless they are integrated in the correct way. I have explored this type of integration at length and I understand how to do it, but anyone that does not have a good grasp of the GPL could spend a lot of time writing code only to have it become invalid / illegal.

It might be a good idea for Joomla! to post an official warning about this. I know I would be very, very angry if I spent considerable resources in creating a bridge only to find out later that it is illegal / invalid.

If I have the time I will check the bridge later today.

The legal team, nor the Joomla! project can officialy endorse extensions. We cannot recommend an extension in any official way. If an extension is listed on the extensions site we can only point it out.

In the light of recent discussions involving the official bridge between SMF and Joomla! I would suggest to inform Joomlahacks about possible license compilance issues that could exist with the SMF license. If they have legal questions they can contact us a license AT opensourcematters DOT org or they can contact SMF directly.

Johan
