"IMDB"-like Component
I was just wondering if anyone had considered writing an IMDB type component?
One of my sites is for a theatre company and it would be awesome if I could have the list of shows, cast and crew and let people sort by shows or people like you can on IMDB.
It's be even better if it integrated with Community Builder so that cast or crew members that had signed up for the site could have a link to their CB profile!

Re: "IMDB"-like Component
Yes, I'd be very interested in this as well!
There is a cinema component on here that gets close.
It just needs the IMDB api integrated, the rest is all there.

Re: "IMDB"-like Component
Not really, unfortunately. I tested this component out today.
There's no link to IMDB whatsoever.
Unless the request was for creating your own db from scratch, which seems crazy.
You'd want to drop in the title and pull IMDB data via the API.
Cinema requires a lot of work to input all the details, forces an image upload for each title, etc. Very painstaking

Re: "IMDB"-like Component
Actually ... in my case ... the request was for an IMDB-like component where I could create my own data from scratch. It's for an amatuer theatre company and I'd like to let people look up shows and cast/crew members for all of our shows.
I'll try that cinema component mentioned above and see how I go!
Thanks!

In that case, yes, I think Cinema is the way to go, although it's not a perfect fit, it's a start.
Good luck!

Hi,
I'm too interested in an IMDB-like component...
have you found anything closer than the existing Cinema over here?

In my case connect to the IMDB api & extract information about the movie, without the need to manualy insert it into the DB...

Shouldn't be to hard to create. Give me some time to popup something (will have to look how this api works).
How do you want this to look? Could you make some scetches?

Re: "IMDB"-like Component
If your dealing with the IMDB api, then I think a search option for TITLE or IMDB ID would sufice.
the general look could be similar to the Cinema's look. (in case of a user wanting to manualy edit or comment).
btw, Cinema does not have a FrontEnd admin page.
it would be nice to allow a user to be able to insert movies, without the need af been an Administrator of the entire system...

Re: "IMDB"-like Component
maybe this can ease the proccess of searching IMDB...
I'm not sure about open soource but this PHP MovieDB has some search features...
I'll stop botheing with this last (I think most suitable): IMDB-PHP

Component Admin Sketches
The main issue with Cinema is that is expects you to MANUALLY input all the details of a film.
This seems rather silly, who wants to type what is already known on IMDB?
The perfect example is Awesom!, which does exactly what I think is needed, except with the Amazon API:
http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/
So the main functionality would be:
use case: Admin user, who administers Cinema
Enters Title
Clicks UPDATE INFO button
A list of possible film titles with dates from IMDB comes up.
Admin clicks correct title
API pull the following into DB:
Poster/image
Full, correct title
Director
Film date
Description
Admin clicks SAVE or adds other Cinema specific info (availability )
I hope that is clear. I'll add a sketch shortly

Re: "IMDB"-like Component
That's right...
Naturally our first release does not allow an easy insertion of data,
and we are working hard in order to obtain our best.
We are trying to implement, in the new versions, something inspiring us to this program
http://www.antp.be/software/moviecatalog
that capture the data, not only from IBDM, but also from others international channels.
Sure the job is a lot and I personally being been involved in many plans,
(italian core translation, test ect) . for that i do not have much time to dedicate to the development of this project that I
am carrying ahead with others two friends of mine.
Suggestions, critics, aids and councils are appreciate to obtain
a good product that can be used from all joomla users.

Re: "IMDB"-like Component
We are looking for a cmponent to integrate into Joomla.
You're moviecatalog is a stand-alone windows based program.
We are looking to share our moview database on the web, without the need to export it...
is there something about moviecatalog that I'm missing?

Not so fast.
The licensing section states that you may contact them to request licensing
http://www.imdb.com/Licensing/
There is also a note that pulling content from their TEXT repositories may be permissible with their consent for nonprofit use.
Why would they do this if this were prohibited. I think it's a question of making sure the use is nonprofit.
(I wonder if driving traffic back to Amazon DVDs would be considered for profit, even though it's in Amazon's interest!)
I'm going to contact them to ask what's up.

there is a big difference between accessing the data localy for your own use and republishing it on the internet
And have you actualy tried to download the database. Not one of thethree ftp servers listed actualy works. I suspect that this is an outdated page

Re: "IMDB"-like Component
There is an update for videodb on http://mamboxchange.com/projects/videodb/. You may want to check it out.
There is an option for importing from imdb.
I have tried it but I didn't get everything to work. Please let me know your experiences.
Or did I mis something and is there already another imdb-like component?

Re: "IMDB"-LIKE Component
As informative as this discussion was ... It mostly missed the point!
I don't want to access IMDB ... I want something that EMULATES IMDB that I can add my own data too.
I run a website for a community theatre group that do two musicals and two concerts each year. What I wanted was to be able to enter all the show, production team and cast information into a database that users could search on. Search by a persons name and see what shows they've been in and what roles they've played.
Look up a show and see what the show was about, who produced it, who worked backstage and who was in it.
That sort of thing!
The Cinema Component was close ... but too limited and didn't work too well on Joomla 1.0.8. I can't remember the details but one of the elements of the admin tool would fail to load each time I tried to access it.
The best I've been able to find on my own was the MosForms component that made it look pretty easy to build a db and frontend that would be suitable but alas ... Mosforms 0.4 doesn't seem to like Joomla 1.0.5 or 1.0.8.
Sorry ... I guess should have been more specific!

Ah no problem...
I use an open source tool for linux http://opendb.iamvegan.net/
You can add movies yourself. Users can add reviews etc.. All of options, but it looks really terrible.
For me, I just want to have my collection of movies in a nice database and I prefer to use Joomla.

Oh yeah ... I came across OpenDB during my initial searches ... you're right. It's ugly! Works nice as a video library from what I remember but not much good for cast and crew lists if I recall.
I think I'm either going to have to learn to write my own component (Bugger all chance of that!) or hope that MosForms gets updated soon ... might send the author an email and see if he has another release coming ... that and ensure he is taking the Joomla path and not sticking with Mambo.

Sorry JackCorbae,
I think I took this off track early on, and I do understand what you are trying to do.
Perhaps I was 'subconsciously selfish' by going into that direction as it's something that I was trying to solve.
Do repost here what you end up using for your local database, as I think such a project is useful to many of us.
This suggestion may also be off-topic, but I use Snapstream.com BeyondTV and Beyond Media.
In their forums they have a great thread on how to manage media metadata for DVD libraries and local films stored on HD. It may give you some clues as to what people are doing to manage their film libraries.

Re: "IMDB"-like Component
The years go by ... still no component to let me build a cast and crew database in a theatre based Joomla site.
I tried FacileForms (or whatever it is called these days) but even with the freely available database information from imdb I'm still not clever enough to build a whole application. (Or even figure out a simple one in FacileForms!)
