Hi all.
is it possible to not only create custom css for modules/menus, but also for individual menu-items? I'd like to assign individual background-pictures/colors to menu items in the same menu. I saw that in the backend-menu for the modules one can attach class-tags to make modules easily distinguishable, so I'm wondering now if something similar is possible at the menu-item level. Or maybe there is a CSS-trick to count items of a list and assign each element a unique style?

I'd appreciate a note, if someone knows how to do this, or where I can read up on this. Or is this definitely a case for a static element?
thanks!

this is not possible in a default joomla. You will need to hack the menu module or perhaps find a 3rd party menu that allows this

I did produce a hack a while back. The mod_mainmenu.php file may have changed a little since then but I expect it will be easy to see where to apply the hack

here is the thread http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,54561.0.html

oh, hey, thanks a bunch. I'll definitely take a close look at that. But before I loose myself in such details I should maybe get the rest of the site set up and running, and then start to fiddle with those hacks. And learn CSS better. But I will come back on this for sure. Maybe I attempt to go a step further and modify the administrator-back end, so I will have my own text-box there where I can enter a tag/id for each menu-item(just like the textbox in the module configuration dialogue). We'll see...

Someone's already done the work: it's a module called Extended Menu (and apparently also used by joomla.org):
