Hello,

A client and good friend asked me if Joomla would allow him to keep using ecto  http://ecto.kung-foo.tv/archives/000990.php, An XML-RPC app that allows him to keep his site updated.

I would like to know if there will be support for this app and when.

Below is short description of the products

Quote:
ecto is a feature-rich desktop blogging client for MacOSX and Windows, supporting a wide range of weblog systems, such as Blogger, Blojsom, Drupal, MovableType, Nucleus, TypePad, WordPress, and more. ecto is the successor of the wildly popular Kung-Log, which has been in use by thousands of Mac users and which earned a 4.5 mice rating in the MacWorld July 2003 issue as well as high ratings at VersionTracker.com and MacUpdate.com.

With ecto you can write and manage entries for your weblog(s). The advantage over using your weblog's control panel is that you can compose entries offline and use the extra features ecto offers, such as spellcheck, creating links, attachments, and much more. ecto is designed to make blogging much more easier and yet give the users as much power as possible to manage their weblogs.

Thanks a lot for your help

This seems like a nice fullfeatured client application. Would indeed be very cool if we would provide native support for it in Joomla. Maybe any of the community developers want to take on the task ? Any takers ?

By the way when I tried to install it....... It asked me to  install .net Framework 1.1 (annoying  :() is there some other software along the same lines which is Free or opensource ????? (I will try finding on my own and post it here )

Edit: Update Just found some free ones

Blog Writer

Semagic (Open Source)
w.bloggar

The Best one I like is w.bloggar awesome it got support for Drupal too  :D (B2evolution Wordpress, Xaraya and Postnuke are also supported)

I use ecto on OS X and it's a great client. I had thought about using it to publish to Joomla, spent ages searching for an easy way to do it - but alas. Anyway, in the best DIY tradition I went and got a book on PHP and sat down on Saturday to look at how I'd do it. Long story short, I have a POC script that so far allows me to retrieve section information and content from that section. It's nasty at the moment (hard-coded DB stuff and no user authentication) but is enough to give me confidence that I should be able to bang out something.

The next step is to make use of configuration.php for the database information, followed by user authentication. I'm searching around at the moment to find out how I can check if 1) user is a registered Joomla user and 2) decide if user postings from the client should be saved or saved & published i.e. try to fit in with the Joomla user management scheme.

Other than that, time is the biggest constraint.

I have written several xml-rpc components for Mambo/Joomla including a desktop blogging tool and remote mambo administrator (Use local admin to connect to and administrate multiple mambo sites)

However there has never been enough support for me to invest any more than hobby time only into such a project.

XML-RPC along with AJAX can provide some the the greatest application administrative interfaces around, see my upcoming project for an example (secret at the moment)

Phil, I saw some of the bits you wrote alright - I looked at modules-xmlrpc along the way. Didn't see the desktop blogging tool, I'll have a poke around for it. No point re-inventing if there's already something out there.

it was never released publically - the Core team at the time had copies in the CVS but I think they have al been wiped away now.

It was a project headed by Robert Castley called "Rambo"

Ah ok, that's what Rambo was then. Presumably that used DOM XML-RPC - which I can't get the hang of (I've got about 2 days of PHP, so it's hardly a surprise). Found http://scripts.incutio.com/xmlrpc/ (used by WordPress) much easier to get quick results out of.

Actually we used DOM and Incutio at different times in our concepts.
