Yes, the installation instructions I wrote are suppose to work on your Windows XP computer with IE.
To check your version of IE start IE, Click Help, Click About IE.
It should read Version =  6  Version update = SP2 update.

I know about working with crappy dialup service. I just got DSL even though I didn't want to spend the extra money.

I'm happy that my instructions helped someone

Have a profitable day!

Thanks for the instructions, jz, but after hitting problems with MSAS messing my Windows fonts around (http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,3937.0.html), I've got an even better idea:

Don't use MSAS, use XAMPP instead (http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html).

 • XAMPP is available for various platforms including Windows.
 • XAMPP for Windows includes lots of extra stuff for Apache/PHP compared to MSAS.
 • There is also a "lite" version with just the basic Apache / PHP / MySQL /phpMyAdmin etc.
 • The full version is about 25MB and can be downloaded as a Windows installer file, which is very easy to install.
 • The "lite" version is downloaded as a zip - instructions on website.
 • The website includes full instructions on how to install and set up XAMPP.
 • It also advises you to set the "root" password for your local MySQL and gives you a handy link to a page that does this for you.
 • There's also a little XAMPP application for stopping/starting the servers etc.

To install Joomla as well, you just have to extract the Joomla zip file into a folder under your XAMPP "htdocs" folder e.g. "htdocs/joomla", then go through the usual Mambo/Joomla installation process via http://localhost/joomla/ and tell the Joomla installer what DB to use etc.

For more information on installing and using Mambo - more or less the same as the current Joomla - you might want to get Hagen Graf's book http://www.packtpub.com/mambo/book.  In fact, the good people at Packt Publishing currently have the chapter on installation online as a PDF:  http://www.packtpub.com/files/Mambo__Chapter2_Installation.pdf

How easy is that?

As for me, I've just installed the full version of XAMPP plus Joomla and it works great.  And even better, it doesn't screw up my Windows fonts.

No more MSAS for this monkey!

Chris

TO ALL YOU NEWBIES, you should be very thankful for the information Icmhwebster  has published on XAMPP web server and the information I published on MSAS to help you set up a web server on your Windows computer.

A month ago when I got started with Mambo/Joomla and was using a dial up modem this information was not available to me.

You now have the information you need  to setup whatever web server works best for you.

Have a successful day!
JZ  :)

Wasn't easy enough for me. I had a successful installation of XAMPP and Joomla, but for the life of me couldn't figure out how to do FTP in localhost! And if that wasn't bad enough, then I couldn't get XAMPP and Filezilla to work due to server being busy. At least XAMPP was easy to uninstall!

Gonna switch to MSAS since I used that for Mambo and will give it a shot for Joomla. All I wanted to do was to learn how to install SMF!!

I have installed MSAS and Joomla on my PC which is using the XP operating system and it seemed to work immediately, but now when I try to access the site i get the following error message:

This site is temporarily unavailable.
Please notify the System Administrator

Any ideas what might cause this and how to correct it?
