Anyone have a workaround to allow cross-referencing of content items in menus?

For example I'd like the content item apples to show up in two menus

Round things
donuts
apples
baseballs

Red things
apples
fire trucks

I've though of three ways of doing this, but all have serious drawbacks...

1) Just link to the same content item from both menus- The problem here is that the item then has two different Itemids and that creates all sorts of nightmares (see FAQ)
2) Link to the item as content item once, and then as a link url in subsequent menus... This still assigns a new Itemid for every new link but they are easier to work around...maybe...and I still have to try to keep track of which is the "real" link and which ones are copies...
3) Copy the content item and assign the copy to the second menu.- The problem here is that if i update the item I have to remember to update the copy as well.  That's silly enough if the item appears in two menus but what if it's on a third (Edible things for example), or fourth....

These approaches would have to be classified as serious content missmanagement.  Anyone have any other suggestions?
I'm working with over a thousand items so it can be too labor intensive for each one.
