Have you installed the server services programs (like IIS, apache,v.v)?

Try to remove all of them. Then reinstall a fresh one after delete the old files.

I am running on Windows XP SP2,
I have installed:
XAMP as you mentioned.
All recommended Apache and My SQL are running.
When I am going to Step 3.2 Installation:
Firefox-->http://localhost
it show up the following at browser:

Object not found!

The requested URL was not found on this server. If you entered the URL manually please check your spelling and try again.

If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.
Error 404
localhost
06/20/07 14:46:40
Apache/2.2.4 (Win32) DAV/2 mod_ssl/2.2.4 OpenSSL/0.9.8e mod_autoindex_color PHP/5.2.2

Why it happens?
I need your help ... replying me ASAP.
