Hallo there,

If I make my component GPL, I read that I can still encrypt it, but I have to send the code to anyone who requires it for cost no bigger than the cost of the actual sending.

So, can I still encrypt my component, and sendto whoever asks for it a printout of the code (I was thinking in pages 10cm X 10cm), and charge them for the printing, cutting, binding (it will be in the form of a very small book), and the package and postage?

Would that be ok with GPL?

Under the GNU GPL the copy must be machine readable.

The source code for a work means the preferred form of the work for making modifications to it. However, as a special exception, the source code distributed need not include anything that is normally distributed (in either source or binary form) with the major components (compiler, kernel, and so on) of the operating system on which the executable runs, unless that component itself accompanies the executable.

If distribution of executable or object code is made by offering access to copy from a designated place, then offering equivalent access to copy the source code from the same place counts as distribution of the source code, even though third parties are not compelled to copy the source along with the object code.

So, If I put it in one of my old 5'' floppy disks and send it, I am ok? (I am joking of course, but I would still like an answer) :-)

I think i have to cancel the garage sale i have planned for next Sunday. The 80's pc will be very useful to me!

I believe the license states it must be machine readable code. I dont believe this precludes encryption. I could be wrong though.

I believe the answer to that is no.  The GPL says that you must provide access to the machine readable source code via a medium that is customarily used for software exchange.  It could be quite easily argued that distributing on a 5" floppy is no longer customary.
