Hi, I have to create a new community based on Joomla. In your opinion which is the best solution for now? I should install a 1.0.x Joomla version or a new (unstable) 1.5 one? Which will be the easiest and the safer solution to upgrade when 1.5 stable will be released?  ???

It is advised that one does not use 1.5 (Beta or RC) for a live site.
But I think *developing* a site (without going live yet) can be done with 1.5RC. No major changes will be made anymore in functionality.

There will not be an 'easy' upgrade from 1.0.x to 1.5 in the sense of upgrading 1.0.12 to 1.0.13 by just overwriting some files.
But, to make things easier, there will be a migration script provided. This script will let you migrate data from 1.0.13 to 1.5.

Earlier I suggested to someone not to go live with 1.5 RC1 but after a while of playing around with it, it seems to be doing fine.

One problem is the addons or extensions not fully compatible yet with 1.5. I think if you are pretty much using a default install, I would give it a go. Of course, at your own risk. Make sure you do continuous back ups, you never know.

Well, if I decide to install 1.5RC it'll be easier to upgrade to 1.5? Do I need the script to upgrade from 1.5RC to 1.5?
I'm a bit sad..I need to start creating the site and now I have to decide what to do..!In your opinion how long it'll take the release from the 1.5RC one to the 1.5 one?

RC means it CAN be used for a production site.

If I were doing a new site I would do 1.5 for the reasons you mentioned, while with an existing site I would hold off switching until you see what happens with all of the extensions you use. They should work fine, but let there be some testing first.

As far as I know 1.5 is not yet secure, so don't use it for a 'live site' or am I behind?

But I still miss a thing, if I install 1.5RC I'll need to upgrade to 1.5? If it's so, how? With the script mentioned by Gerlof?

A migration script is only needed when going from 1.0.x to 1.5. So *NOT* for upgrading a 1.5RC site to 1.5 Stable.

Upgrading from 1.5RC to 1.5 Stable is much easier, because the database will stay the same.
Only some (already existing) files on the server have to be overwritten.

So when you are going to build a site from scratch I can only give the same advise mcsmom does: start with 1.5RC.

Suc6 (as we say it in Holland  8))

RC means ready for a production site.

I've never read it that way. RC stands for Release Candidate and while it may be steps away from becoming a Stable release don't be surprised if there are security issues that are caught before the final stable version comes out. The 1.5 code represents such a major change to the cadre of Joomla that I believe it foolhardy to jump in with your production site until a Stable version is released.

If you are interested in how the project goes about developing, testing and releasing code to the community please read the documents related to the Development Cycle or the more comprehensive Development Strategy PDF.

Note: I am not a bleeding edge type of guy. I make a point not to install new versions of software on critical machines or purchase the latest technology products as I have been burned many times by these behaviors. YMMV.
