We have decided to close down the GPL discussions.  After three months of sometimes heavy discussions it is time to move on. This decision has been taken in the best interest of our contributors and especially the forum moderators who have been spending a lot of time and energy moderating the GPL threads.  A very difficult task seen the sometimes emotional nature of some of the posts. Our respect and gratitude goes to them for keeping the discussions on track in the last three months.

Joomla! is not a legal consulting project, we are a technology project. Our mission is to make the best free software CMS possibe, we offcourse also need to inform people about the license that this code is released under. We believe we have done so in the past 3 months and time has come to move on.

From this point forward the Foundation Working Group legal team will take over. If you have any questions regarding licensing we ask you to first consider the following general standpoint of the Joomla! project before contacting us about license questions.

Quote:
If you want to distribute a Joomla! extension (plugin, component, module) we encourage you to license it under the GPL v2 or a GPL v2 compatible license, if you choose not to license it under a GPL v2 compatible license you should seek your own legal advice from an attorney to determine if your work can be deemed a "separate work".

Note : Some parts of templates (potentially php-code in particular) are also subject to same consideration as mentioned above. Some parts (potentially at least the non-php code) of extensions are subject to same consideration as templates.

People that still have questions regarding the Joomla! license are encouraged to read the Joomla! license FAQ and the archived GPL forums first before asking any further questions. Issues that have already been discussed will not be re-discussed.

We are asking you to direct specific license towards :  license AT opensourcematters DOT org instead of posting them on the legal forums.
