Does anyone know what is going on with this project? I would greatly like to get it running on my site but they have yet to release any release for it.

Any ideas on what is going on that would be great or some insite on the project development.

Thanks

I can't answer about gigCalendar's development but this topic is asking whether it has become vaporware.

Hi I had sent the devs of GigCalendar a mail from their site some weeks back re: beta testing what they have, but so far no response.

I also hope this will be released soon as it will be a really cool component once released.

I've been debating about writing my own version of gigcalendar.

Take eventcalendar, add tables for bands and venues, and the add a band and venue to an 'event' and you are pretty much done.  I doubt it'd take more than about 8 hours to get a useable beta working.

Decided to put my money where my mouth is and start working on my own version of gig calendar since I'm currently working on websites for two different bands anyway..

Hopefully, I'll have a useable beta up in a week, and then people can drill me for all the real features that they need that I was too stupid to include in the first release.

I think I mentioned this on the *ambo forum a while back, but a project like this would be a great platform to aim for integration with components that can easily hold and query for example venue information, while keeping those tables modular for other purposes. Weblinks or Bookmarks could certainly do the job.

Or draw artist information from ArtistDirectory or a similar content component, instead of creating a new table for storing what would essentially be the same information anyway.

Elsewhere in the forum, it's been mentioned that the GigCalendar is still being actively developed. My patience is infinite, and the Events component I'm currently using is holding its own thus far, even with over 1000 entries.  ;D

Aww Shucks, and I wrote the whole backend with my own tables last night.  However, after quick consideration, I think you're right.  It'd be great to integrate it with other mambo components.  I'd shy away from using other 3rd party components as I don't want to track their upgrade path or deal with any big changes they make.  However, when I think about it, it makes sense to just use contacts for both Venues and Artists/Bands as contacts has almost all the fields I designed anyway.

I currently have both time and need for the component, so my patience isn't quite so high ;)

it was suggested in another thread to use/link in content items for the event descriptions.  AKReservations does this.  That would allow the use of mambots and really open the door on possible usees.

About 36 hours ago I did email gigCalendar, pointing them to the two topics on this forum discussing their product and inviting them to let everyone know whether it has a future.

It's kind of quiet ... maybe they're on holiday.  :o

:) they are probably getting tired of being asked the same questions.  I asked the same one and sent them the same threads recently.  Graham is part of the gigcalendar team and has been posting about progress on these boards. http://forum.opensourcematters.org/index.php/topic,2803.msg22438.html#msg22438

It sounds like those pesky paying projects are slowing it down, but it is still coming.  I guess we will just have to be patient a little while longer.  :o Patients for free stuff!  Say it's not so, Graham!

Using Contacts sounds good for sake of keeping updates simple, though if I understand correctly, it might become a little messy trying to pick out both artists and venues for queries  if they're lined up in the same table.

Time would be so awesome right now.

I will see about doing this.  It's a good suggestion, but I'm starting with a prebuilt event component that already handles descriptions differently and just adding on the features I need as I feel they are important.

I coded up the basic admin panel section this morning.  I just created contact categories for the bands and venues, so you can seperate bands and venues by category in SQL pretty easily.

Short Term Goals:
Take the existing eventcal thing I have and just add functionality to attach bands and venues to the events and change the display to get contact information from them into the event for display.  Allow customization of how the components and modules look throuch CSS and allowing you to choose which fields to display on the component and module views.

I'm hoping to get done with that in about a week.

After that I have a whole lot of other ideas, but I'll work on those after I get through this much.

Yeah I am wiating patiently for it myself. As it will and hopefully work well intergrated into my site.

I hope that it is released soon as I have been waiting patiently since May.

After finishing the admin panel and working on the component display, I came to the same conclusion.  It leaves it as kind of a mess.  I'm debating whether to go to my own tables or whether to just use one contact and figure that most bands aren't going to need to list dates for other bands, so they can just list venues and most venues don't need to list other venues, so they can just use the contact for bands.

I really hate the idea of replicating the wheel and making my own tables and contact views for them, but I also hate losing the funcationality.

Sounds like a hard call to choose whether venues or performers would work best using Contacts as the placeholder for their info.  Defintely depends on the audience you have primarily intended it for.  At least around here, performers have more of a knack of taking advantage of event calendars and the like for their gigs, while venues or promoters have a harder go at it for some reason.

In either case, having tables other than Contacts for each group would take a little more time to code front and back end interfaces and parameters, but would likely make your component easier to draw queried information from, and extendable.

As a footnote, I'm trying another approach for the time being, and am hacking up the Events code to work as a moslate bot within my venue information pages, which happen to be Bookmarks.  So a nice little mambot like {events:get Venue="The Fuzzy Navel"} in each bookmark detail item would drill down upcoming events and link to the details, just like the day, week and month views in the current Events Component.

That took much less time than I had imagined  8)  Still needs a little formatting work, but the whole site will likely be joomlafied in short order anyway...

http://www.pointri.com/component/option,com_bookmarks/Itemid,31/task,detail/catid,1/navstart,0/mode,0/id,20/search,*/

It's a moslate (thanks DE), and I'd share it, but I hacked up the Events component to the point that I lost track of the modifications.

Either way, it's proof of concept that it's a fine mess of a challenge to get some of these components working together!  Makes much more sense to me now why new components for *ambo or Joomla are often developed for similar functions all the time.

Well, kewl until an Events 1.3 potentially appears and I try to reintegrate all those ugly hacks to make it happen again.  I just upgraded to Bookmarks 2.6 after a couple hairy moments of worry.  ;)

pointri - that is really cool. good work on that.

dougthonus - we also started out on the path of modifying the existing Events Component. We worked on that for a few months before determining that it would have almost immediate growing pains. We started again from scratch and are probably 85-90% finished. The main issues left to solve are mostly with UI issues, including skins and some other minor odds and ends. Its a pretty fantastic script so far, if I do say so...

Sorry we don't have a final 1.0 release ready for you just yet...but soon! We get SO MANY emails about gigCal that it has been impossible to keep up. Sorry if we haven't responded to your particular email.

There is some recent exciting news in gigCal land: we've been featured in an article about mambo in LinuxUser and Developer magazine. We'll be posting the article soon on our website. Many thanks for Peter Russell of Yorkshire Media for including us in his article.

It seems that it's comming soon ..
there is some works in progress this day ...
with the "version 1.0" tag for release
Image

Maybe they muist have to change "for mambo" by "for joomla", isn't it?

We have made our initial commits at the development home of gigCalendar:
http://developer.joomla.org/sf/sfmain/d ... cts.gigcal

You'll find discussion forums, bug trackers, progress graphs and the excellent Subversion system at this new site. This server is running the latest SourceForge Enterprise Edition software which looks to be very good for development.

As we've said before, the majority of the changes yet to be completed before the gigCalendar 1.0 release are cosmetic and/or help the UI be more intuitive. We are all very excited about our first major open-source release. Along with this excitement comes the responsibility to release code that works. Please continue your patience while we put the gigCalendar 1.0 release through various testing environments.

Here is a link to the aforementioned article in LinuxUser and Developer magazine:
http://www.nuthinwerked.com/downloads/mambo.pdf

The article was written a few months ago, before the change to Joomla. As newbiepp has mentioned, we have been updating the project's documents to read "Joomla + Mambo" so as to avoid confusion for users.

Again, many thanks to Peter Russell of Yorkshire Media for including us in his article.

thanks very much. I am slowly going through the code....and have found a few bugs. I just compiled them all into one and it happens to be an installer issue. Check out the bug located in the bug area. Will begin to squash more after the sql queries are fixed.

Cheers,

It gets me excited just looking through it.  Seems like it has neat features that I've been having to hard-code into items.

But I'm already cringing over what a migration of items from other components would involve.  Oof.

The install file is being worked on. It is to include most of the intial queries and as a result needs to be created before we'll accept any changes. We appreciate everyone wanting to help. Until we make these first commits and release the first version it will be hard to ask for any help just yet. Thanks for your time.

Does anyone know if Gig-Calendar will allow you to show a listing of events featuring different bands on the same list???

Example, I want to use it as a Calendar of events, therefore, on the first row it may look something like the following:

12/31/2005    BAND A    Seattle.WA USA      The Showbox    Tickets  Map  8:30 pm
01/02/2006    BAND B    Chicago.IL USA        The Showbox    Tickets  Map  8:30 pm
02/03/2006    BAND c    New York.NY USA    The Showbox    Tickets  Map  8:30 pm

But all on the same list. I hope it does because it seems like a great add-on.

Thanks!!!!

JM
