"Note: due to the Router refactoring there will be known issues with SEF url's."

does it means sef isn't working at all?

I've done a quik test.... upgrading from -RC1 aug 30 nightly- as described... overwriting entire joomla folder and getting out installation folder and:

sef off  >                  working
sef on - rewrite off  > working
sef on - rewrite on  > not working at all      (.htaccess present)

then Itried a clean installation with same results

Just for your info, RC2 working perfectly for me with SEF on and rewrite on, on two different providers.

Guess it's provider dependent though.

Ok so RC2 appears to have completely broken my url's. Weird that there would be different results  ???

Anyway, mine has gone beyond just SEF url's, all menu links in front end AND some links in the back end administration seem to be broken.

In the front end I have some category blogs which now all display the same 1 content item which is in a different category.

In the back end, i can no longer edit content items. See pictures below where i click on the top content item called "contact us" and i get taken to editing the content item "what we do" instead.

Incidentally the "what we do" content article is the one displayed on all my pages in the front end, and also happens to be the first article i wrote (has an id of 1)

As stated in news article:

"It is roughly five weeks after the RC1 release and we have made major improvements in certain areas of the 1.5 codebase. Time to share another RC with the community. Some improvements and areas of changes are listed below:

Router refactoring solving a range of bugs
Media Manager refactoring, moving this to MVC standards
Updated scripts (version); mootools, tinyMCE, Xstandard
Core template improvements
Template language installer support
... and of course a lot more

Note: due to the Router refactoring there will be known issues with SEF url's."

Yes yes, i was just commenting to the fact that perhaps more than just SEF URL's have been effected. I can't get ANY URL's to work as they should, and even have issues in back end.

Actually, that's not quite right, it appears to be issues with Category Blog URL's and content editing in the back end, to be more specific.

By the way, my RC2 install was  clean to an empty directory and with a new and empty database.

Don't know if that makes any difference.

Interesting.

Have you tried a clean install with the sample database on the same system? (You could back up and clear your existing db).

That would help pin down if it is only an issue with existing data.

Maybe that's what "due to the Router refactoring there will be known issues with SEF url's." means.

Could a core team member clarify perhaps?

I have problems too, but it seems it is because I have my install in a subdirectory, not the root.  I have seen this problem in a couple of other posts too.  It seem mod_rewrite was not working as of the RC2 release and they are working on fixing it.

It's working for me. Maybe I got lucky with my config and setup.

Ok.

You checked for DB structure changes? I think there have been a few .

My odl 1.0.x site before migrating... It was on diet for a few days, then I migrated with a lot of troubles (rc1 and a buggish com_migrator). I checked the DB structure too, sure. A few changes, such as change of a name field or added a field (the famous alias in jos_content table).

Well I guess we just have to wait until they get the bugs out.

I think that it would be better to wait, if you can... or as me, you can migrate slowly as we joomla will be ready I don't know if I have so much time for all these efforts... The problem is not to migrate only but then to have a site working, with extensions that you have to use in legacy mode and You don't know if those extensions are well coded for this option...

GREAT! I finally figured out what was stuffing mine up so much. I eventually worked out that the problems I was having was just me and not Joomla at all. It was all caused by an old Cookie on my PC.

While trying to figure things out I also upgraded to yesterdays nightly build and while that didn't solve the cookie problem, now that i've figured it all out I now also have SEF working great again.

My SEF issue is that the menus' hyperlinks are being written with relative urls, and I have installation in a sub-directory.
(SEF on; mod_rewrite on)

Typing SEF URL in the browser works fine.  The menu's are the problem for me.

Older installations wrote out the complete URL in the menu links so this was not an issue.

Some Notes (on SEF in a subdirectory)
'Search Engine Friendly URL's' to 'Yes', 'Use Apache mod_rewrite' to 'No' gives menu relative hyperlinks without "/" like Home

Search Engine Friendly URL's to 'Yes', Use Apache mod_rewrite 'Yes' gives menu relative hyperlinks with "/" like Home

Apache mod_rewrite setting to 'Yes' is the variable  $sef_rewrite = '1';  in configuration.php

Here's a hack I just got to work for mod_rewrite for a site in a subdirectory.

line 321 in includes/application.php:
Code:
$options['mode'] = $this->getCfg('sef');
         if(!$this->getCfg('sef_rewrite')) {
            $options['prefix'] = 'index.php';
         }
         else { // IS SEF_REWRITE gc mod Sept 12
               $options['prefix'] = '.';
         }

The calling code strips the ' . ', but evaluates the URL properly.  :)

I was also having trouble with my clean 1.5rc2 install. It was in a subdir of the root and I had SEF and mod_rewrite on. I had also updated the RewriteBase but it was not working and the menu links were still linking to / (root) instead of /subdir/. After I changed application.php to what you specified it works now. I did have to toggle the settings back and forth and ctrl+f5 to get it to fully work but now its golden. THANKS!

This is what I did to get it to work:

In your httpd.conf file add this:

c:/program files/apache/htdocs/website">
    AllowOverride all

In the above the path in italics will be your path to the root of the joomla install.

Alan

Thanks for this fix Gare, it works beautifully. Hopefully your patch or an equivalent will get included in RC3. :)
