OK, I think I've done what I can do for this version.

Here's what was added (aside from some little code improvements):
  • Fixed a PHP notice.
  • Added ability to have a seperate description if there is only 1 comment (so you can have singular and plural descriptions).

Description available here.

Download available here.

I tried this out with the Joomlahacks version, and it seemed to work OK, but I had some little errors whether or not I had this installed, so it wasn't perfect.  I'd appreciate someone else testing this.

And, finally, for those just tuning in, what this is:
The purpose of this is to have discussions connected to your content items.  What it does is put a link in your article that will bring the user to a forum post for that specific article in the board you specified.  If the forum post doesn't exist yet, it will create it.

Usage : {mos_smf_discuss:Board Name} into any content item. Of course, replace "Board Name" with the actual name of the board in which you wish for the discussion to take place.

Other features include:
  • The ability to automatically add links to all articles.  You can also use {mos_smf_discuss:no_discuss} if you have set it up to auto insert and you don't want it to show in a particular item.
  • The ability to have the link only show on the full article, not on the intro only front page.
  • The ability to see the posts from the forum at the bottom of the article, with optional parseing of the BB code and smileys.
  • The ability to have a quick reply box at the bottom of the article to add posts to the forum.

Does this version of discussbot work with GZIP turned on?
I'm not using it just because of that, although I'd like to...

Probably not - this really just adds additional functionality to the one that shipped with the bridge, so it won't fix that problem.

Hi there, it seems that the post only shows the introduction to the article if the mambot command is in the intro (as if the intro were on the front page)

In a way, I suppose that's as it should be, the user should read the whole article, then reply...so, you'd put the command in the end of the article, that works.

What about updates to the article?  It doesnt change the post, could it? should it? will it?

thanks for your time,
juglesh

Hey Chadness, I was just on CNET looking up some gadgets I might buy soon (don't you love how boxing day streches for weeks these days ;) and saw that they have a commenting system that displays comments collapsed in list-view with a selected one open at the top of the list....

..do you think its workable to make the discussbot collapse the comments in when they are viewed in articles, rather than the forums?  As it would take quite some time to implement Ajax or java to make a collapsable list, perhaps a selected comment could pop-up like the way joomla handles print-pages.

Correct.  If not in the intro part, it won't parse the part of the mambot that is being shown there, so it can't show it.

No, the first time it's clicked on, it makes the post in the forum.  From then on, it's just like any other forum post, stored in the forum's table, and doesn't communicate content at all.

Wow, sounds like a cool idea.  Might be a bit beyond my skills, though. :)  I'll have to look in to it, if I ever get free time.

Right on, I'm guessing such functionality on a commenting system might be more easily achieved with just a simple component like akocomment... Might look into making it happen somehow if I find time in the next couple of months ;)
