Hi all,

Currently I work with OS editor Notepad++ and I was wondering what editor(s) you use.

I'm looking for good editor that supports CSS, HTML, PHP, mySQL, etc with syntaxhighlighting and the option to add custom snippets. It needs to be fast and lightweight too ;) Any suggestions?

For php and html I use PHP Coder (http://www.phpide.de/), which is rather basic and I'm intereseted in a better tool. For CSS I use Top style pro, which I'm happy with.

What are the benefits in comparison with editors like Notepad++, Crimson Editor and other free editors?

jEdit looks like a good editor but loading the program lasts a couple of seconds...
A program like Notepad++ loads in less then a second on my system. I'm looking for speed because I don't have any patience at all :D

I'm quite good in typing  ;) Unfortunately not that good in coding, hence what I'd need is a good debugger... any suggestions on that?

Thanks,

Oli

I use EmEditor, its not very common and it lacks a lot of features, and its not even free, and I know there are much better editors out there!

but for some reason whenever I try to switch to another editor I go back again to EmEditor mainly beause its interface is so clean and sharp I am actually more productive in EmEditor than in other editors that might have a few more features.

PSPad is a freeware editor that's showing a lot of promise, I keep trying it every few months but its interface is so cluttered I quickly go back to EmEditor as usual. :)

I seen several people recently mention eclipse + phpeclipse & I am curious to try it but it seems so huge and complicated, u need Java + Eclipse SDK (100MB) + phpeclipse (20MB) + Debugger etc.. and the documentation on their site isnt exactly encouraging either.

Zend Studio

But since most of Core Team are using phpeclipse I might move to that sometime soon.

TextPad. I just make sure that I download the latest syntax definitions on http://www.textpad.com for PHP, CSS, HTML, XML, and C++.

For making the first mockup of HTML, I use Dreamweaver and Fireworks. My PC crawls whenever I use Dreamweaver though (I don't think I've seen a bigger bloatware), and unfortunately, I'm now using it less and less, and depending more heavily TextPad.

I've heard of PHPEclipse. I've alwats wanted to give it a go, but I would always lose my nerve whenever I'd read the installation instructions. Talk about daunting.

I have been using UltraEdit for years now on Windows, still have to settle down for a tool which runs on Linux.

I think you would get help on that if you really want. The new installation is a bit more difficult and the instructions are not clear enough... This is my summary:
1) Install Eclipse (eclipse.org)... installation involves mainly downloading and unzipping the SDK, then just run eclipse.exe (on windows)
2) Install WTP:
  a) Menu -> Help -> Software Updates -> Find and Install... -> Search for new features to install
  b) Then check mark the "Eclipse.org update site" -> Finish
  c) When it shows you the available Updates choose WTP within the "Eclipse.org update site" and Finish
3) Install PHPEclipse:
  a) same as 2) b)
  b) add an update site with the URL "http://pipestonegroup.com/eclipse/updates" (the name is up to you) and check mark it
  c) similiar to 2) c) just select PHPEclipse from the (newly added) PHPEclipse update site
(2) and 3) may be merged)

I couldn't live with TextPad when seriously developing something. If you are more "designing" a page (editing HTML) then PHPEclipse may not be the best choice (in fact, most of the non-PHP part which was formely part of PHPEclipse is now in WTP, thats why it has to be installed with the new version).
(And you should have enough RAM)

Hope this helps.

Homesite for HTML/PHP and Topstyle Pro for CSS.  Can't live without Homesite, even though macromedia killed development on it a few years ago.

I stated i use PHPEclipse for php development.  I should also state that this is not the case for template development which is basically HTML and CSS.  While in the windows world i used PSPad http://www.pspad.com/, it's free and excellent.  Those of you who have used Homesite will feel right at home.  Think of it as Homesite on steroids.

On my mac I useTextmate http://macromates.com/ for template development. This costs about $40 but is well worth it in my opinion.
