Hello my name is John Reynolds. I am 16 yrs old and live in the DC area.

As the title of this thread would suggest, I am working on a project that has to do with major Open Source development contributors. I have some coding experience, and a tiny bit of background knowledge to this topic. This is my first task on the 'highly open' project, so I have a few questions; hopefully to be answered by a moderator.

- Are projects to be turned in to this forum or Google Code?

- The specific directions said that I needed to download and install Open Office. I did that. Is use of open office for the autoring of the publication a requirement, or may I use the program of my choosing?

- If any program is allowed to be used, what format is preferable to be turned in?

- If the preferred format is locked (.pdf), is the source file necessary?

- What are the limitations on images used? Are pictures from free encyclopedias (including Wikipedia) allowed?

- What are other acceptable places to find pictures to be used in this publication? Is clip art OK?

- Are citations necessary for pictures, and other facts found (note: I would NEVER plagiarize. I just want to know if I need some sort of bibliography included.

I look forward to completing this and other projects in association with Joomla.
Thanks.

Hello John,

I also live in the DC area. :) As far as the file goes, we'd like to have all submissions in Open Office format. This way, people can modify it later if desired. As far as images go, I would imagine that any images you have license or rights to distribute should be okay. But you need to double check when dealing with Wikipedia: it does contain copyrighted images that the authors believe fall under fair use. Fortunately, all of the images are tagged with the status, so it's easy to check.

Hello John - Welcome to Joomla!,

What an articulate set of questions you have provided. Your writing skills are excellent and will prove very helpful for this task.

Initially, we would like to see you attach your work here, in the Joomla! forums, so that the broader community can review and provide feedback. When the task is complete, you will upload your work at Google Code.

We would like to see you use an open source solution since that is something that everyone can freely get. But, if you have a particular application in mind, please share your preference. It will be important to have the source code, in case changes are needed. We are best prepared for an Open Office Writer .odf file.

Certainly images and information that is freely available, or that uses a creative commons licensing, can be used. In cases where attribution is required, you should follow those guidelines. It would certainly be acceptable to include quotes from these people or others about these people. This is a tri-fold, so, it won't contain a great deal of information, but it might be helpful to provide links to some of the resources used, if for nothing else than to provide additional reading information.

Thanks.

I am thrilled you have joined us. Other community members are encouraged to review your work and provide you feedback. I will serve as your primary mentor on this task. Ask questions, as needed. We are here to help you be successful with your task.

Good luck in the contest!
Amy :)

I just thought I would ask if you have seen Revolution OS.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 2627775409

If you haven't seen it, it is a must see for every FOSS user, in my opinion.  It is an hour and a half, though.  It traces the history of the free software movement back from RMS and GNU in '86 to 2001, when it was released.

Sorry about the lack of updates.

I looked over the linked tri-fold example and liked the style of it. I will try to modify the .odt file as a template to fit the needs of my brochure.

Content is coming, and that video really helped! I will try to have something posted by tommorrow night for review.

Thanks for all of the suggestions so far.

John -

As a reminder, this task is due this coming Wednesday on Dec 12. If you have a draft we can begin reviewing, that would be awesome. Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards,
Amy :)

Task canceled due to lack of any reviews and the due date has passed.

I am going to lock this thread so there is no confusion with the next person who takes this task.

Thanks!
Amy :)
