How exactly did I cause this to happen?  I discovered also, that if you create a folder with ftp client, you cannot use joomxplorer or media manager to upload to it or create sub folders.

how do I get around this?  the whole point of building the joomla site was so that client can manage it themselves - it looks like I have a great deal of the site that effectively blocks client from uploading new files using the joomla interface and normal methods via joomla!  I've shot myself in the foot!

I've since built some joomla sites and was more careful about how I created certain directories and uploaded files and am having more success with client editing, but on this one site I need some suggestions!

You should probably CHMOD the directory you created with the ftp program to the point where Joomla can change it.
Otherwise, you can delete the directory and create it through the media manager, which will make sure it has the rights it needs.

I was mistaken about Media manager - I have been able to use it for what I cannot use joomxplorer for.... thanks for the help
