I upgraded using the full package and just unzipped it inside cpanel. The rest of the site seems to be working fine. The exception is the RSS

I have cache directory with 777 permission

All the files inside the cache directory have also 777 permission.

Still I cannot retrieve RSS feeds from other sites, neither can people access my page that contains the with rss feed:

http://www.brazil-brasil.com/component/ ... no_html,1/

The message I get in this case is:

Warning: fopen(/rss10.xml): failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/xxxxx/public_html/includes/feedcreator.class.php on line 711

Error creating feed file, please check write permissions.

As for the RSS feed I would like to have I just get the message:

Cache Directory Unwriteable

Thanks for any help or hint

Does this also resolves the error:

This is a different matter.

It means your cache directory does not have the correct permisisons

I don't think that the permissions are an issue here. I have chmod 777. same error. I've seen others users with same problem.

I've solved the problem this way:
Go by ftp to the website cache directory (/home/*****/public_html/*****/cache) and chomod to 777 these files: rss20.xml // rss10.xml // rss091.xml // opml.xml // atom03.xml
Now it runs nice !
Hope someone finds a better way!

Good to hear it worked for you.

In my case, all the files mentioned are already with 777 permission. And the RSS feed still does not work.

try
1- Admin / Modules / site modules/ edit mod_rssfeed and check allow cache. Then on frontend click the feed link on the module to create new files rss20.xml, rss10.xml, rss091.xml, opml.xml, atom03.xml. Then chmod 777 one by one.
2- Alternate, a radical aproache: delete the files them, then start all again

Even deleting all files, placing new ones, and then chmoding one by one to 777 didn't do the trick. I have included the problem in the bug tracker in the Joomla Forge

Thanks

I experienced this same problem.

My RSS feeds were all working fine, then I upgraded to v1.0.8 and they broke  :-\

I tinkered with the permissions on my cache directory, cleared out the cache files in there, still the same fopen error.

Then I decided to check my cache settings in Joomla and they were all blank !!

I entered in my cache directory details, enabled caching, and bingo - everything works.

Maybe a red herring, but this happened to me on three different website - all with the same problem and the same cure.

Great, Dave

You solved the problem. Not only for the feeds from my site but for the feeds I get from other sites.

The cache folder on Global Configuration/Cache was simply empty. I had to put my info: /home/xxxxx/public_html/cache and evrything worked out.

Thanks a lot.

Ahhh now I know why people are experiencing this problem then.
I was curious why there were so many reports regards this.

Here is the explanation:
In 1.0.7 and below RSS feeds would create cache files in
/cache/
this was hardcoded into the system.

However, in Global Config, you have always had the option to select the name and path to your cache directory.
The problem was for feeds this setting was never used, so if you changed the setting, feeds woudl still create cache files in /cache/

In 1.0.8 fixes were made so that the system would now use and check the cache path set in your global config setting.

If you dont have a cache directory set, than feed caches cannot be created as it doesnt know where to put them.

Will add additional warnings to ensure people are aware of this in 1.0.9

Anyone know of any reason why my .xml newsfeeds are working and my .rss aren't?

Other than that everything seems to be running fine.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but my config file has a valid cache path and I still am getting no news feeds.
My set up is a fresh install:
  • database Version:  4.1.11
  • PHP Version: 5.0.4
  • Web Server: Apache/2.0.54 (Fedora)
  • WebServer to PHP interface: apache2handler
  • Joomla! Version: Joomla! 1.0.8 Stable [ Sunshade ] 26-Feb-2006 05:00 UT

No errors are reported even at maximum reporting.
Access_logs and error logs show nothing unusual.
Just no news feeds of any kind.  Not the prebuilt ones nor any that I might have added.
I tried playing with cache dir permissions and nothing.

Any Ideas?

Hi,

I also have troubles with the RSS reader. And I already have followed the above instructions, but unfortunatly no luck.
The path is set correct and the dir is set to 755; cache is on; and the strange thing is that RSS 2.0 is not working but an xml file is working alright. How do I handle this? Here is my server settings:

PHP built On:  Linux srv48 2.6.12.6-vs2.0 #1 SMP Wed Oct 12 12:28:03 CEST 2005 i686
Database Version: 4.0.24_Debian-10sarge1-log
PHP Version: 5.1.1
Web Server: Apache
WebServer to PHP interface: cgi-fcgi
Joomla! Version: Joomla! 1.0.8 Stable [ Sunshade ] 26-Feb-2006 05:00 UTC
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; nl; rv:1.8.0.2) Gecko/20060308 Firefox/1.5.0.2
Relevant PHP Settings:
Safe Mode: ON
Open basedir: none
Display Errors: ON
Short Open Tags: ON
File Uploads: ON
Magic Quotes: ON
Register Globals: OFF
Output Buffering: OFF
Session save path: /tmp
Session auto start: 0
XML enabled: Yes
Zlib enabled: Yes
Disabled Functions: disk_total_space, diskfreespace
WYSIWYG Editor: No WYSIWYG Editor

I hop that there is anyone that could help me.

Roy

I'm having problems getting RSS feeds to work in 1.0.8. I've applied the updates mentioned above and I see RSS content in the cache files, but it isn't displaying. Are others having similar problems or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks,
Robert

I found in another thread that Joomla doesn't read ATOM feeds. It just so happens that one of the feeds I'm trying to get is an atom feed. I was able to get something working with code from http://www.the-art-of-web.com/php/news/2/ and putting it in a wrapper. Maybe it will help someone else.
