Hi,
My PS and computer drawing skills suck, but here is the idea:
Joomla! already has an African name, so lets make a simple icon of another African symbol - the BAOBAB tree

Just exactly like with us, and with the OpenSourceMatters. Here, the "villagers"-developers called up a community meeting and decided to start a new project -Joomla!

The simple stylized baobab tree combined with a word Joomla! will create a nice flow to the name. I see brown and green used for the tree...

Very nice,
but I would simplify the design a little and add some color.
It might be difficult, but I was thinking about creating a foood like icon, logo:
