Note: even thoug this project is develop for Mambo but in the current form of Joomla I think this should also work for Joomla as well.

Like many of you I have been using Simpleboard and has been looking for alternative. After several months of searching and I found one alternative and I want to share with you in case you are interested!

There is a little forum package call "Phorum" that developed by Brian Moon and his teams, they are super helpful by the way!

This forum is a very fast, extensible in term of module and template or skin and the design is so flexible that can be use as a "slave" forum to the master application CMS with the help of Maurice's embed module.

I have been working with the developer name Maurice Makaay to create a way to embed "Phorum" in Mambo/Joomla while he is working on his own embed project and the result is the "embed_phorum" connector is born with a Phorum component for Mambo/Joomla preview version.

If you are interested here are the steps:
. Download Phorum and install it as a separte apps (Note: make sure to create the admin login in Phorum to be different with Mambo/Joomla so avoid sync issue)
. Download the embed_phorum module and follow the instruction to enable it
. Install the Phorum component for Mambo/Joomla into Mambo/Joomla via Mambo/Joomla component installer (Note there is no admin panel for this at this moment)
. Create a link to your phorum component in the menu.

That's it!

As soon as you visit the "Phorum" it will sync your user betwen Mambo/Joomla and Phorum. Here is a link to my test site if you want to take a quick look:

http://chanh.opensourcecms.com/mos/inde ... &Itemid=76

Here is a link to Phorum site: http://www.phorum.org/phorum5/

And here is a link to the integration project: http://www.phorum.org/phorum5/read.php?28,53902

The purpose for this post is to try to guage the interest of this project and to see whether I should attempt to work with Maurice to enhance this project further.

Please try it out and let me know what you think.

Thanks

Well, I'm interested. It looks like a nice, clean forum. I'd want to have some modules like the latest_5_posts and if it were xhtml validated it might be enough to get me to change over one of my sites.

Phorum is design to be fast and not bloat but it has the module and template that you can add anything you want and skin it in anyway you wish but not come as the default install.

There are several very nice templates available for free that make it very nice if you are interest.

I just want to make this as an option in case people are looking for an alternative.

Thanks for the tip. Can you also create a reply here. This way, it will be added to the ever growing list of components and other CMT's.

I like the fact that it looks to be somewhat plain but get the job done. I do like SMF and others for their features but for some smaller sites it's really not necessary in my opinion.

Actuallly Phorum is design for site that have big forum traffic.  That is why it is design to be fast just for that reason.  You can see for yourself when you visit the site and read about their claim of the volume that Phorum is used for.

They even use it for blog as well.

Here is a quote from their site:

"Speed Comes First

The group of developers of Phorum had very different needs. Some needed software that could run a single forum with over 2,000 new posts per day. Others hosted over 4,000 forums on one server. The end result is a versatile product that can serve anyone's needs."

Clean, simple, and fast! I guess I don't need all the features for a smaller site. Some larger sites also wouldn't need all the features.

Thanks again for sharing. I'll try to keep my eye on this project and give it a try when I have some time.

Back on to the thread!

I want to let you know my progress with this new forum of choice!

I developed a migration script to migrate all posts from Simpleboard and of course it can be used for any fork of Simpleboard as well.

I just finished a migration from Simpleboard to Phorum for a few sites. It works flawlessly!

You can see a sample of this new forum here:
http://opensourcecms.com/index.php?opti ... Itemid=173
http://ongetc.com/index.php?option=com_ ... Itemid=175

As you can see it is nicely "embed" into the site's theme.

Following your directions, I got Phorum up and running as an embedded component in Joomla.  It required modifying a file in the component package and a few other files, but otherwise, it worked flawlessly.  I would like to see the script that you developed for migrating from Simpleboard, if you don't mind posting it.

It is not a hack!  I developed a standalone script that convert simpleboard to phorum.

necessary.  If you need more functionality, you simply install the module, instead of having a HUGE app with a ton of things you don't ever use.  Lean and the best part, THREADED if you want.  There aren't ANY threaded that work well other than phorum, and the templates allow you to make it look the way you want.  I also use another custom app called KAWF, but that's stand alone and has no bridge; it really doesn't stand a chance on the flxibility of phorum, which plays nicely into the general credo of a CMS app.  Highly recommended, and with joomlaboard pretty much not working with 1.0.11, a great alternative.

This can not be called as a bridge. It is very difficult to config it. At last I gave up.

Since we can integrate SMF with Joomla! 1.0.13 perfectly, why phorum ?

Forget it, unless the author of this bridge really make it as a true Bridge component.

Today I reviewed the Link about embeding Phorum into Joomla!, it seems that the author has not update that script for a very long time.

Why not improve it to integrate Phorum with Joomla! 1.5.x ?

Thanks.

This is not a bridge but rather is a embed system. It is not like any normal bridge that you know!

Maurice try to make it work with Joomla 1.5 but it does not work for him. If someone know more about Joomla 1.5 and would willing to work with him, he is a very motivate person when it comes to phorum embed system.

He just need someone know more about the inner working of Joomla 1.5 to get him on the right track.

Thanks
