Also note that we are considering this a conversion rather than an upgrade.

I downloaded joomla! 1.0 from the new SourceForge and I am following the above instructions to convert mambo 4.5.2.3 to joomla! 1.0. The second step says "Remove the Joomla /installation folder". The problem is I don't have any installation folder only a INSTALL.php. Other than that everything is working well.

I guess the version I downloaded( JoomlaV1.0.0-Stable) was without an installation folder. I went back to the Source Forge a day later and Downloaded again (Joomla_1.0.0-Stable without the V) and now I have a installation folder.

I understand the difficulty involved in this CONVERSION as opposed to s simple upgrade...
Many issues force the complications, and time pressure I know played a part. But wouldn't some sort of conversion script where only the changed files are overwritten be made?

My main concern is going through all the permission loops again because your asking us to delete a bunch of folders and then copy new ones in it's place...won;t we lose all the permissions set?
And if there is no major change to the database (as was stated) why wouldn't a simple overwrite work much the way the upgrades do?

Not complaining mind you just wary of how many support requests this is going to generate because the instructions are written in a way to scare the living bejeezus out of anyone who isn't familiar with these kinds of things... LOL

I'm going to back everything up now and tackle the upgrade tomorrow when I have a fresh pot of coffee and a good nights worth of sleep to work with!

If the Dev team would like I don't mind playing guniea pig and trying the simple overwrite method to see what transpires...
I'll make sure I can get back to normal and if it works I can write up what I did...
Has it even been tried or was it done the way it was to make sure every reference to mambo is gone?
I can understand that but don't see why simply overwriting all Mambo files with Joomla versions wouldn't do the same thing...

In fact for the help.joomla.org site this is what we did, simply overwrite existing files.

However it is always prudent to start from a clean install where possible and to backup always before undertakign any kind of upgrading.

if we're just going to do a clean install, do we just use the mambo installation folder for that? I have the folder for 4.5.2.3, and i'd definitely have a much easier time simply installing everything fresh than converting, as it certainly scared the living bejeezus out of me just looking at everything :D

my notes to the migration:

.) before you delete the installation-directory copy the migrate_Mambo4523_to_Joomla_100.sql
.) the $mosConfig_cachepath has also to be changed ($mosConfig_absolute_path)
.) not just the components directory, also the admin/components directory has to be copied
.) i would suggest to search for the old path, there are some components f.e. remository (in this case the up and download-path), that don't use the $mosConfig_absolute_path

Thanks Stingrey,

The Backup was always a given...I learned my lesson 6 installs ago! LOL

Am I reading you right that your saying it's better to run the Joomla installation as a new install and then import the mambo db into the new Joomla DB using the script provided?

If I do simply overwrite the files I read the instructions to say I still had to run the Mambo-Joomla SQL script to allow the new admin template correct?

Does it matter which version of 4.5.2 you are using currently when upgrading?

Hi guys,
first of all thanx to all of you that have been included in the process of setting up joomla which has been extraordinary impressive.
Unfortunately I have a Problem I am not able to solve.
After working through the described migration procedure and also through the procedures described in this thread, I get the following error messsage while opening the website:
Quote:
Fatal error: Class mosaro: Cannot inherit from undefined class mosdbtable in /var/www/web88/html/joomla/joomla/includes/gacl_api.class.php on line 1790

I hope anybody can give me the hint how to solve this issue
Christian

I did the upgrade using the overwrite method.  I've got way too much other stuff in my $ROOT to try and do the transfer as described in the docs. Well, I could do it but it would take a long time to sort through all the other files.

Is there a list of old Mambo files that should be deleted?  I suppose I can generate this list myself by diffing the distribution with the files I have on my system.  But if someone's already done that work I'd rather go with that.

Hey Mindxing the problem I noticed with the just overwrite option was unless your permissions were perfect some files would not overwrite. and in changing a live enviornment there are always a couple of files that just can't be overwritten because the server locked them (usually because someone hit the site...)
Basically the method they described is simpler...Simply upload to a seperate folder, copy over the files you need (and remember to copy the images, admin com and mods as well...I didn';t and it screwed me for awhile until I relaized it.)
Then delete all the mambo files and simply move the files in the Joomla folder to the root...

after having gone through it I understand why the instruction said to do it this way...

That's a good point.  I will have to reconsider my plan (well, I already did the upgrade but maybe I'll have to do it again).  So far I'm not seeing any site or admin problems.

You might not see any problems....
the only thing that let me know there was a problem was when I opened the Admin page and the header said Mambo not joomla...
I just assumed the copy didn't work until I tried to delete the mambo files and saw that some files would not allow me to delete them...
Thats when it hit me that the permissions would mess with the proccess and thier way was better...

I'm sure this will differ from system to system as the permission situation changes so there is no reason why it shouldn't work it's just that to be SURE the method they posted was the best...no doubt that the files got overwritten because they weren't there anymore to conflict...LOL

NOTE:

dont forget to copy over your  /images directory too, it doesnt mention that in the conversion instructions.

*edited*

also /administrator/components

i had some things in there that i needed to also copy over

worked well for me so far..

except for the fact that the dtabase prefix is now change from mos_ to jos_ which breaks some 3rd party modules and components, easy enough to change though

overall, a very easy conversion

thanks guys

Just a clarification, jos_ is now the default in the configuration.php file but it can be anything, mos_ included.

I figured for now it doesn't pay or is neccesary to chnage the database at all...
Im presume that Joomla 2.0 will require this at some point and by then it will also require new modules and components by then or that the coms and mods that exist will be written in such a way to work in both...

Since no one on the frontend really knows or cares what the database is called and what the prefixes are It didn't seem all that important right now...
I can always run the script later if I have to...

i think that as of version 1.1. things in the database will change allready :)

although it's not really needed, i was pleasantly supprised to see the joomla template in the backend :)
