Hi, I am new to Joomla. Have a development site on localhost. See attached forum post assistant printout. Everything was going along swimmingly, suddenly I am unable to login via the administrator panel. There is no error message. Tried changing the password via phpmyadmin, still not working. Front end seems to be fine. I may have installed a rogue component/plugin? Not sure what to try next.

I have been using Dreamweaver to change css. Also updated the TCPDF library yesterday which generates PDF files. Not sure if this could have been the problem?? But the frontend site seems to be fine except the login doesn't work for admin or user acc.

I have a backup from before yesterday but unfortunately did not get another one before the problem occurred and installed a lot of articles. I need to know why this happened because I don't want it occurring again.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

MA

Did you enter your encrypted password into the database or use your regular password? If you didn't encrypt before putting into DB, this should be added to list of things.

1) What are you using to host your development environment?
2) What errors does your apache2 log display when you try and log in?
3) Did you recently enable SEF or URL Rewrite in global configuration?

As far as the articles you entered, even if you need to restore to an older backup you can easily export and insert by ID the articles using PHPMyAdmin.

Just check your comfiguration.php file and check the settings in their. What was the component or plugin you installed. Was it anything like suhosin as this comes up in the report "Potential Missing Extensions :: suhosin". I maybe wrong but i dont think suhosin comes with the standered Joomla installation.

Think I will have to do that instead of messing about.

Another thing I noticed is that when going to the frontend home page, it just goes to index.php/component/users/?view=login - the message that displays is 'Please login first'. I'm unable to login using the administrator username and password.

I'm now thinking that I could have adjusted the users permissions incorrectly and that is why no login. Now because I'm unable to get back into the admin backend to check users permissions is it possible to do that via phpmyadmin? Maybe just better to get last backup restored and learn my lesson well. Too many late nights working on this, being interrupted by people dropping in and losing concentration on what I'm doing...

When you changed the password via PHP My Admin and assuming your password is Password; did you enter Password into the DB or the encrypted version?

My guess is you entered just the text version, as Joomla 2.5 uses a MD5 Hash which has been salted and requires a bit of leg work to replicate.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1042 ... encryption

If you have another profile which still has the encrypted password and salt for which you know the password, you can simply copy the encrypted password into the admin's password field using PHP My Admin and you should be able to login.

I cut and pasted the admin password (same one) from a second Joomla backend superuser account so it wasn't a text version. This still didn't work.

You mentioned you might have inadvertently changed the admin user permissions. Find the id for the super user in #__users table, it's usually 42 unless you changed it, and verify that value is listed in the #__user_usergroup_map with the proper group_id for the Super User primary key id in the #__usergroups table, which is usually 8. If not, manually change those values to assign to the super user group and test.

If not, back to the drawing board!

Thanks for all your suggestions and the quick response on this board. Will bear that in mind next time.

I have now restored to the latest version and can login both front and back end.
