SEF Problem in Joomla 1.5 RC3

Post by vivekprakas » Wed Nov 07, 2007 10:54 pm

I'm trying to have user friendly URL. It works fine if i dont select Apache rewrite. But i dont want to see index.php in the url. So i choosed Apache mod rewrite. It genertes URL as i expected but doesn't load the page. I check httpd conf file. mod rewrite is uncommented.

What could be wrong.

thanks

Vivek

Excellent!  8)

Did you rename the htaccess.txt file to be .htaccess ? (Note: that is DOT followed by "htaccess" - no period after).

Would you do that, then send the URL for your site? Need to see what happens.

Thanks!

Very bizarre.

What release of Joomla! are you using? Did you use the latest nightly downloads? If not, download the latest nightly unzip it and replace your website contents.

Before you do that, though, throw the last option on so that the extensions are working and let me know, then I'll look, again.

Do you have redirects or URL masking or anything funky going on with your domain name?

Hi Amy

Thanks a lot for your rocket fast response.

I tried the same with one of my site in siteground. It works Perfect.

This one is in my system at office. I think it's coz of the domain name. I have installed mysql in the same pc. In the configuration file i have given the host as localhost.

Any idea why it's not working. I think this is not a joomla 1.5RC3 issue. Something wrong with the settings.

Any clues?

Well, I don't believe you are having any database connectivity issues since the page does present itself. It's a URL issue - that came out of the interaction with the database.

What version of Joomla! v 1.5 are you using? I still don't think you've answered that. If it's not the nightly, *please* install that, then let's see where you are at. It's impossible to know if we aren't using the same code. Lots has changed.

Now, why do you think this might be a domain issue? Curious on that.

Thanks!
Amy :)

Well, the other machine doesn't have the third option enabled of SEF URLs, either.

Dude - I'm at a loss at the moment. You have a good release of PHP. You are connecting to your database. You are using the latest release of Joomla!.

How did you create your htaccess file?

That's the right thing to do.  :P

I am wondering about your Apache rewrite capability.

In your httpd.conf, you should have a section that defines a section for each Directory on your server. Make sure the AllowOverride is set to All for the correct Directory.

Code: Select all

<Directory "C:/websites">
    #
    # AllowOverride controls what directives may be placed in .htaccess files.
    # It can be "All", "None", or any combination of the keywords:
    #   Options FileInfo AuthConfig Limit
    #
    AllowOverride All

</Directory>
Make certain the rewrite_module is not commented out.

Code: Select all

LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so

Test if your Apache rewrite is working. After your "RewriteEngine On" line in your .htaccess file, add this:

Code: Select all

RewriteRule (.*) http://www.google.com/ [R=301,L]
Then, go to your site - and you should be redirected to Google. If that works, then take that line out and see if your URLs work now.

HTH,
Amy :)

HTH,

Where is the file httpd.conf located. How do I edit it?
I use shared web hosting. I have uploaded and install joomla 1.5 RC3 on my server and installed it.
I am getting similar problems like above.
Thank you!

Hi jhoomlajhooms,

if you can't get httpd.conf yet, just use 'search' function, type "apache". Windows will locate for you. Look for Apache folder when completed. Open it and find the httpd.conf. Use of wordpad or notepad will do to open it.

Please see HINTS for SEF URL Link Problems - 404 Errors - Page not found. There are seven trouble shooting steps many have found helpful in getting SEF URLs working for them.

If that doesn't help you resolve your problem, please respond with your answers to each question. Then, we can begin!  8)

Also, bear in mind, as we speak, developers in Washington DC, New York City, Mountain View CA, San Francisco, Vancouver and Brussels Belgium are smashing bugs - and Louis Landry, himself, is zoning in on SEF URL issues. Some of this is going to quickly get brushed away.

Stay encouraged,
Amy :)

Hello Amy, i am trying to solve a similar problem.

when i use SEF URLs, i have a yellow ! mark by "Use Apache mod_rewrite".  When i enable it, the links look perfect, but they go to 404.  I am using 1&1 and i dont think i have access to the httpd file.  Any recomendation?

Did you go through this list: HINTS for SEF URL Link Problems - 404 Errors - Page not found. If so, share your answers to each question. That will help explain where we need to start.

Thanks!

1. Check your PHP version against the minimum requirements in the Installation Guide. (We have also seen some PHP 4.4.7 problems.) Consider upgrading to PHP 5.x (but check the system minimums closely.)

i am using 4.4.7, and i dont think i am can upgrade.  I am usng 1and1 hosting.

edit: I added a line to my .htaccess, AddType x-mapp-php5 .php into the main directory and the joomla folder.  That brought me up to 5.2.3.  I am still having the same problem.

double edit:  Just noticed, when i create a poll, the options show up blank, but you can click on the vote.

Please go through all seven steps before responding. I am thinking step 3 might be needed. Work through the entire list. It will not take long.

Bumping my issue over to this thread, from here, as it seems more on topic here.

Amy, you're aces - thanks for the link. Here are my results to the 7 hints:

1. Min. Req.:
PHP: 5.2.3
MySQL: 4.1.22-standard
** I can't find a simple way to make sure I have the mods installed.

2. n/a

3. done (as per the original post)

4. All SEF options are turned on.

5. .htaccess is fine. Just to be sure, deleted the file and am using the one (renamed) from the nightly.

6. I added that line:

Code: Select all

RewriteRule (.*) http://www.google.com/
It didn't work. Got pretty excited that I may have come across where the problem was. Read another post of yours where you give a slightly different RewriteRule test:

Code: Select all

RewriteRule (.*) http://www.google.com/ [R=301,L]
Put that in my .htaccess file instead of the first, and ended up at Google upon navigating to my main page. So, no problems with rewrites.

7. I don't use IIS.

So... no luck there. Anyone have any other suggestions?
