Some (important) Developers jumping ship? What can be done?

Post by ganar » Wed Aug 24, 2005 7:16 pm

Hello,

What do you feel about the fact that some good developers seem to be leaving their projects?

http://mamboforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=6653

http://mamboforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=6642

I think that one of the things that make Mambo great is the components that can be installed. . This situation is affecting the future of some important projects in mamboforge. I spotted this two news in mamboforge today. Both are excelent systems that we are sad to see ending development.

The worst part is that at least in the case of Xaneon the developers  are going away completely to another platform...

This whole situation seems to be shacking the belief in Mambo as a platform for many people. Comments on how to keep these and other good developers onboard are welcome.

There is nothing that needs to be done, everyone decides for himself how to spend his/her free time. Remember, the choice is everything including the choice to stop developing for Mambo and, God forbid, jump ship.

it is not a new thing, I can think of quite a few Mambo modules and components where the developer has ceased keeping things up to date.

Nothing new there at all, There have also been developers of CMTs that have made it known they support this move.
It is going to take some time but I would not worry that much.

My experience as a developer is small, I have converted some pieces of code to work as modules and transformed some components heavily to adapt them to our needs. Given the scope of my work I do check mamboforge, news.mamboserver.com and forum.mamboserver.com a lot, still this whole problem took us by surprise.

I can imagine a lot of the developers outside the core team to be at the very least shaken and sad about what happened and about the fact that even though we are all in a community not much trascended until recently and no one seems to have asked about the decision made –neither miro nor the core dev team- to the rest of the users and developers.

Some of this can be read on Eyezberg good bye note:
ex-mamber wrote: Never any transparency, everything and all decisions happened behing closed doors.
I do feel sad that some of this developers are leaving and ask again for opinions on how to keep those projects alive (glossary and xaneon utilities are both excelent). I suggest that if anybody can offer a way to reach ALL the developers in mamboforge and inform them of what is happening and were Mambo stands at this moment that may be useful in making them feel that at least somehow someone tryed to inform them  after the fact. ( I know it seems like PR and that many people will feel that is waste of time, but I feel that is the propper thing to do in this case)

ganar, I fully understand where you are coming from.  I disagree with you on one thing though - I really don't think anything needs to be done right now.  At the moment, until the dev team have all the legal issues sorted out and can come back to us with their roadmap for the future, there is not much that can be said.  You will note that the core is having to keep quiet for now.  It's only been a week and it will take a little time for everything to settle down.  Until the core team have everything in place to move forward, and this includes getting a new project zone set up, it would probably be unproductive to do more.  Unfortunately, what happened with Miro meant the dev team had no choice but to go "behind closed doors" to sort things out.  Once those doors are opened I think you will find a lot of the 3rd party developers will be coming on through (least I hope so!)

I am one of the most impatient people around, so I can hardly believe I am here to urge patience!

I hope Peter wont mind me saying so, but the next version of FacileForms will be for the soon to be named CMS
That is one of the most flexible and awesome components you can use on Mambo.
see his comments on his support site http://www.facileforms.biz

I really do think as things settle down you will see that most of the players will follow along and a lot of new projects will launch

I have a new component I've been developing using the 4.5.3 CVS. An alpha will be released as soon as we have a name :)

Actually the Xaneon Extensions announcement may be a good thing.
They are very busy and do not have the time to devote to the project.
Opening the source up to the community may rekindle the project.

I have heard back from Arto Bendiken on the Xaneon Development Team.
He has kindly given permission to release the documentation under the GNU Free Documentation License with the proper attribution.
They are talking to other XE2 fans who are interested in the project.
He said "we're being swamped in e-mails" - apparently there is lots of interest.

A very highly sought after component is released to open source and the project takes on a new life. This is a good thing.

We will have an open source advanced SEF very soon.

The way I see it, the new CMS will have almost have a full arsenal of new and improved CMT's than the prev $ambo. And the new CMS is compatible with the old CMT's.

To me this si a good sign of thing to come, a litle patience is worth it

just my 2c

I totaly agree with Ken
The Xaneon dev team even change their Xaneon license back to GNU/GPL
It will give XE the oportunity to develop into a more fresh and hopefuly better component with new a dev team

Any fresh news about Glossary's future? I may be biased, as I use this component on my site, but I've always considered it one of the most useful.

The "Humor, Fun and Games" forum has  more than 2500 Posts, so why not build a "Humor, Fun and Games Working" Group?
.....
Malicious tongues say we have this WG right from the start, they call it core team :D
