When is the first release due?

Post by vavroom » Thu Aug 18, 2005 4:07 am

The cheeky ones wanna know, since 4.5.3 was ready to be released, when will we see the first release of this new, yet to be named, CMS? :)

Yeah yeah yeah, ok...  I'll admit, this post's in jest, but...  I seriously can't wait to see if there is going to be any serious change now that the Miro restraint won't be around (taking into account of course, that legal advice needs to be taken first...)

It will be interesting to see how this is all going to work out.

Well, the next version will be called "The CMS Formerly Known As Mambo" and the logo is a little squiggly thing.

Ok, if you didn't know anything about the musician Prince, that wouldn't be very funny...

That's a very good question and one we need to move on.  Priority is obviously going to be to get the tools for development back to the standard we were used to.

For now we would probably assume the same numbering system for the CMS-with-no-name to at least reduce confusion in that area.  We'll then work out what historic versions of $ambo we are going to support.  I would think at least back to 4.5.1 for security issues.

We've been talking about that upon the release of 4.5.3 that we will actually create a separate 'stable' tree for the current versoin.  For example, the 4.5.x tree would be current development.  Upon release of 4.5.3 stable, we would give that it's own CVS and continue bug fix in both stable and development trees.  In this way we are delivering regular fixes to the stable version in days or weeks rather than months (the Moodle project does it this way to).  I think this will give the community a better level of service and support and far more confidence in the version that they have deployed.

So, I can't promise a date at this stage.  Obviously things that were 'almost' ready to roll are set back a little bit.  I would hope to have any required patches available 'soon' and an alpha 4.5.3 to follow not long after that.

The main thing is that development on the CMS-with-no-name is not stopping :)

Thanks for that Masterchief.

Obviously we're all anxious to see what's what, but I'm content to sit back and let things settle a while.  I'll have a hard time enough explaining what's going on without panicking those clients of mine using $ambo as it is.  I'm not in a huge rush to update all their sites, particularly if 3rd Party components haven't joined here.

And we really must find a name for the CMS-formerly-known-as-mambo....  :)

I say someone creates a thread and in that thread everyone comes up with a cool name.  Then the developers can choose the top 3 names or so and we create a poll and go with the one that has the highest votes.

Anyone like that idea?

If I can say something to all of you
I suggest don't change the name of this project more than one letter e.g. MambOS, many people have customers which can be a little panick when they get to know that their CMS stop to grow. Many people
have registered many domains like many of you and me too ... I think time for change the name will come after some time of growing community etc, logo we can change what we can but name I think we shouldn't

I respect your opinion but I disagree. If indeed this break is to work well the name will need to change. Having the name be something similar will make it very hard for new (and old) users to get a handle on the situation.

I have recommended Freed.

We have to change the name, from mambo-foundation.org
Q – If the previous team leaves, will they still be developing a version of Mambo?

A – The previous development team is always free to take a copy of the Mambo source code to develop their own product. However, they will not be able to refer to their project as 'Mambo' or include the word Mambo in their project's name, as the trademark is globally owned by Miro who has only granted its use to the Foundation.

we need to deside what we need

if we leave the name similar to miro it would be confusing situation, so sometimes you need to make painfull step one time, in order not to regret that you didn't do it in the begining

with similar name we will be always afected by miro

so i sugest think about it before you make decision

Andrew's post (#7) certainly suggests that a new version is being considered almost immediately.

So this whole issue is more serious than I thought. I have been tuned all day to the developments and thought that things would settle down but obviously this time it's quite serious.

Here's to the Core Dev' Team.

I think we need a new name too, and I think it will be easy to explain to my clients. For the quality of the product will  improve and a name is not important for them. What is important is that the product will remain developed.
Thanks Andrew for the quick&clear answer. Good luck with everything!

How about Archetype?

Post by Tony Czeh » Thu Aug 18, 2005 6:18 pm

I like the name "Freed" but I'd also like to throw in my 2 cents for "Archetype" as the new CMS name.  To me that's what The-CMS-With-No-Name should (and will) be, the archetypal CMS that everyone wants to emulate  ;D
