Tons of great stuff floating around in here, but how about changing the flow of thought a bit.  How about something a little more on the cutting edge.

For instance, Six Apart, the company responsible for [spam] and MovableType ... The name refers to the founders birthdays being 6 days apart.  It also, supposedly, refers to the theory of Six Degrees of Seperation.

Personally - I'm horrible with names ... So much so, I ended up naming my company Flashing Cursor - 'cuase I spent hours staring at one trying to think of a name.

Just my 2 cents... ;)

I agree with not using achronyms (man i can't spell today)... but maybe squash them together..

OSM and MOS makes Osmos (kinda)

bit of a play on words with Cosmos, sooooooooooo...

Osmos - The furthest reaching CMS (or something similar).

I took a part of steza's vision and say:

PCM  = People's Content Management

PCMfh  =  People's Content Management / free and heartful

(I think, heartful is powerful at the same time ...)

Thanks ... that you're supporting my idea  :)  .... I think the name needs vowels to have a sound. Just an abbreviation is not enough to keep it in mind. There are a lot of CMSes using CMS in its name.

MOMENTUM open source

Hi all,

I'm an Indonesian, and I'm a big fan of that formerly-know-as-mambo-cms. Right now i am writing a book on that cms. But with this case, I need to make a delay.

There are some words from my country that's been used for IT products out there like Java, Jakarta, Komodo, etc.

I suggest ## karimata ## for the next version of the cms.

I've found the word also exists in Japanese(http://images.google.co.id/images?q=kar ... rt=20&sa=N) and Polish(?)(http://www.cyklotur.com/igor/kariczymat.htm).

Dont know the meaning in those language though, but in Indonesian, it is a name of a group of islands near Celebes. While partially 'mata' itself means 'eye' in Indonesian.

It is easy to spell, easy to pronounce, and its unique sound makes it easy to remember.

Simple, friendly and some tropical feeling. :)

How about

"THE CMS"

or even better

"KUDOS"

Dictionary Definition "Acclaim or praise for exceptional achievement"

It is the Community, Core Developers and 3rd party developers who have made the CMS what it is. Listed in no particular order, i hasten to add.

I got it from a post about the Core Developers and i thought it would make an ideal name for the "CMS formally known as Mambo!"

The post just said Kudos to the Core Developers.

In reading about the dance Mambo I came across this: "One of the greatest contributions of the Mambo is that it led to the development of the Cha-Cha."

Should the new CMS be called chacha? Mambo has led to its development.

PS. PM sent re: avatars (to save going off-topic).

My name suggestion:

Mambada

It has several advantages:

* Not a real word, which means it is probably available.
* Has a dance connection.
* Feels hot and sexy.
* Shows the Mambo heritage.
* Goes well with taglines such as "Mambo may be cool, but Mambada is hot!"

How about SIBIOS
sibi - Latin word for:  to mean, signify, denote.  -- Basically to matter
OS - For Open Source

Signify: (from Webster.com)
- to be of importance -- see MATTER
- to be a sign of

Basically like Open Source Matters but sort of mixed up!

SIBIOS

Drupal

Has everyone had a chance to check out Drupal CMS?  OSCON came to Portland, and the Drupal group gave a workshop at the PSU campus.  They are a young, fast-growing, active and ambitious group, not unlike this OpenSourceMatters group.  The team is very friendly and the forum is very active.  There's a good thread about the differences between Mambo and Drupal.  It seems Mambo is better for businesses and has better ecommerce support while Drupal is better for communities and has very detailed user & permission controls and tidy code.

I was just thinking it would be cool to splice Mambo & Mambers into another codebase and community.  Imagine an uberCMS that was backwards-compatible with both Mambo and Drupal modules, templates/themes, components, sessions, etc.  Or that had fully-functional migration scripts.  It seems like in many areas there are very qualified groups of people both working on similar things toward similar goals, without collaboration.

I've heard people talk about the CMS war and the conquest of high user numbers, but it would be so much more useful if there were a CMS standards body and people worked with compatable APIs.

So something to consider for development goals, but back to the name debate...

I like:

  Tango
  EasyCMS
  OpenCMS
  uberCMS
  StandardCMS

I don't know if it's been suggested, or if it's available, but I think Community CMS has a nice ring to it.

Ok, my first post on this forum  ;D

I like Bounty , as earlier suggested. Maybe CMS Bounty . In my mind it has a lot of meaning to it, both from the word itself and the story/movie about HMS Bounty.
Or maybe a more international word?
I tried to search for some words that is easily understood in many languages, but and ended up reading about the history of languages :)

What about simply naming it coreteamCMS.com works on two levels.

So in the spirit of democracy, how about someone sets a public notice cut-off date for new name nominations, then set up a poll with all of the nominees?  With this many choices we could do several elimination rounds of voting, for example:

Round 1:  Every forum member as of  $vote_date gets 5 votes for their top 3 favorite names.  All votes must be received as of $vote_deadline.  All nominees with votes >= 10 advance to the next round, while all nominees < 10 are removed.

Round 2: etc.

...

Final Round:  Most popular contenders have final vote.  Winner is new name.

If someone comes up with an official count for names and members, we could determine the appropriate number of votes and rounds.

User votes should be published to ensure transparency.  We don't need anybody's brother counting up votes in secret.  ::)
