Open source/FREE/SHAREWARE Software Resources

Post by guilliam » Wed Aug 24, 2005 1:46 am

.

People always come up with questions such as "what software does this?" or "what software does that?". This thread is made available to help out with everyone's aching software questions. There are just a few rules that apply to this thread to make everything manageable.

1. Post only software that is FREE or can try out for FREE.

2. Post the software name, URL, and description.

3. Do not post direct links to software. Post links to their homepage.

4. Do not post/ask about pirated software, cracks, key generators or anything that is prohibited.

5. Forum rules apply. If in doubt ... don't.

6. Check through the thread and make sure there are no double posts.

7. No off-topic (OT) posts. They will be deleted with due notification to the poster. If you want to discuss a piece of software, start a new thread or talk about it in an existing thread.

8. Follow the format when posting software.

9. Do use text from the site as the description. Give us your own impressions.

this post is lifted from @vern of istorya dot net in which same rules stated above applies. thank you. again, NO PIRATED, CRACKS, or softwares of malicious intents and content/purpose such as virii, worms, or its source code or kernels.

Bit Spirit (Freeware)
- Bit Torrent client

First get Firefox : http://mozilla.org/products/firefox

Then get 'em extensions :

All-in-one Gestures
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/marc.boullet/ex ... ns-en.html
Adds mouse gestures to firefox, and a lot of other nifty mouse related things (like scrolling through tabs). An essential extension IMO.

Web Developer
http://www.chrispederick.myacen.com/wor ... developer/
Adds a toolbar with alot of web-developer related tools like viewing a site's CSS,  outlining elements, viewing image sizes, resizing a window to 800x600, generating size reports, and even CSS/page validation. It really is insanely useful (at least for me).

Bugmenot
http://bugmenot.mozdev.org/index.html
Bugmenot is an extension that enables the user to bypass compulsory web site registration, i.e. the New York Times. Really useful for those sites that bug you with registrations.  I read a lot so this is really useful for me.

IEView
http://ieview.mozdev.org/index.html
Allows the current page or link to be opened into IE. So if a page is broke in Firefox then i just use this to open it in IE. Great for testing out pages/layouts/CSS.

Magpie
http://www.bengoodger.com/software/tabloader/
Magpie is an add-on for Firefox that allows you to quickly save media (images, videos) and other documents that you find on the internet. It is designed to help you quickly bulk-download media linked from web pages, as well as numeric ranges of files from sites using the Bukster protocol. Useful for leeching those stock images so you can use them for yerself. Smiley

Copy Plain Text
http://jgillick.nettripper.com/
Does what the name says. Copies text without all the formatting.
For Mac OS X users out there (10.3.x): Check out this great stuff:

Poisoned is a file sharing application for Mac OS X. Poisoned may look like your average file sharing application at first glance, but it is so much more. Unlike applications like Limewire or Kazaa that connect to only one file sharing network, Poisoned can connect to several seamlessly. Unlike Kazaa and several other file sharing applications, Poisoned contains no spyware and no adware. In addition, Poisoned, is, and always will be, free and open-source software.
http://www.gottsilla.net/poisoned.php

Konfabulator is a JavaScript runtime engine for Mac OS X that lets you run little files called Widgets that can do pretty much whatever you want them to. Widgets can be alarm clocks, calculators, will fetch the latest stock quotes for your preferred symbols, and even give your current local weather.
http://www.konfabulator.com/

BackLight provides a menu extra that allows you to turn your screensaver on and off as your desktop background . It can also change your screensaver and open the preferences. Having your screensaver on your desktop is quite a cool effect, but you should probably have a Quartz Extreme-capable machine if you want to handle the load.
http://freshlysqueezedsoftware.com/prod ... eeware.fss

Audion X is a single tool that bravely handles all your audio playing needs, now rebuilt from the ground up. Play your Audio CDs, your MP3s, and your streaming network audio, and now encode, edit, mix, sort and manage, visualize and hypnotize.
http://www.panic.com/audion/

http://www.dumeter.com
it gives a good read out on your current download / upload speed.. simple BANDWIDTH visual reader.

Eye candy for your WindowsXP

FlyakiteOSX
http://osx.portraitofakite.com
Makes your WinXP looks like MacOSX - complete from boot logon to screensaver up to the famous dock. Download the special edition and when installing, choose RK Launcher instead of ObjectDock - the latter is a CPU-resource hog compared to the former.
