Well, we are not going to decide on anything.
The Core team will make the decision. They have hired a professional brand consultancy to help with choosing a name.

I just hope that cmeister2's online database is used in that process, even though 90% of the name suggestions collected are really horrible names (just my opinion). There are still some good ones on there to consider.

While we are all waiting for the new and exciting name to be announced by the Core Dev. Team,
here is what I have come up with after a few people told me that they want to see what I can do for OSOM.
What's the idea behind this design? Well, just let your imagination do the explanation.
Hope you like it.

Here is one for OSM. No one asked about it, but I just had the idea and did it.
Makes a bold statement of the word 'Matters'. In metaphor, the 'M' is structured to support the 'OS' because it matters.

Now, I am curious on what name(s) the "professional" brand consultancy had choosen with the Team.
I guess we will find out in a few days.

osom is awesome... but only in English!

I hope that the dev. team is "language" sensitive... if nothing else for the sake of "marketing"...

many decades ago, CocaCola created TAB. the idea was to have a word that would be pronounced more or less the same in any language.

the beauty of Mambo as a name was that mambo sounds more or less the same in most languages... and the same goes for my favorite (tango).

if the decision goes in the direction of an acronym, I hope that the team will make sure that there is no homonym in any language, specially one with a nasty meaning!

Cheers!
Marcos

Good day,

Core Team,

If possible, please do the Name change before the Software Freedom Day, September 10, 2005.
Coz we choose $ambo CMS as the open source content management system to be showcase in CMS booth this coming SFD.

Hope you understand.... imagine how hard to showcase a CMS without a real name on it........

Im hoping that the election for the new name of our CMS will begin within this week....

Thanks!

Regards,  ;)

Excelent.

Well mambo logo looked like a flower so a fruit is the natural evolution of its state :)

Besides its a juicy CMS :)

Hello All,

I am new to the real Mambo side of the world ----> unnamed CMS as it is for now...

I have a suggestion for the new name...

[For the sake of this email, I will use Mambo as the name of this unnamed CMS, since it is for now
entirely made up of Mambo code]

It may not sounds sexy like Mambo was but to be honest, I never really got the relationship
between CMS and Mambo but it sure sounded {sounds} cool.

Now on to something more pratical, let's look at Mambo's strengths:

1. It is rather easy to install.
2. It is rather easy to use especially compared to other CMS out there [Plone, Drupal etc..]
3. As I see it anyways, Mambo's appeal and hopefully indirect visionary goal is the fact that
eventhough it can be usually to be web savvy/a web designer etc, it is NOT a necessity.
4. It is rather extensible via components, modules, templates, addons etc...
[without losing that somewhat easy to use design]

ok so no more suspense, my 1st thought for a new name was/is:

ABC CMS

[From a graphical/logo standpoint, I'm sure someone could come up with a way to meld the C of ABC with
that of CMS to show unity]

Why? and what are the positive aspect of this name:

1. Alphabetically at the beginning of any CMS comparative list. [Useful from a marketing's standpoint]

2. Language Neutral basically, as ABC exists in so many languages I dare not even count..

3. Slogan wise easy to come up with marketing twists:
As easy as your ABCs, As easy as ABC. With ABC CMS, you can start at the beginning, etc...

4. Implies simplicity in many languages...

and what are the negative aspects of this name:

1. Not as fun as Mambo... [some may even say Boring]
I would like to point out that IBM, Xerox, etc..  are not a sexy name either, for whats its worth and they are
still strong brands - it's all what we make of it...

ok well enough of my babbling... I'm sure there will be a lot of comments [mostly negative I expect] but
that's my first idea..

Sincerely,

Emmanuel Lemor

Hehe I can live with that. But I like the word Mambo even more and allways will - the I won't have by a new domain ;)

My biggest wish is that it's a short word...

How about one of these these african words:
Lumumba = blessed
Badu = powerful
Choki = loved
Xola = peaceful
Dinari = shining star
Uzuri = beautiful
Oba = king
Nakia = faithful
Upenya = life

Cheers

the mambo name should conform to a translation or usage of a foreign lanaguage, from spanish to african or whatever. It is fair to say things that are similar i.e. citrus, is used in french citron, and in spanish and portuges and sort of in german are fairly similar.

So people who maybe foreign can look at the name will be given an idea that it is citrus and not just a translation that knowone knows. To use citrus, a slogan, could be "Add Zing to CMS"

When we were gathering our short list of names we used every resource availalble to us.  That most definately inlcuded all the name threads here in the forums.  We should have some more news for you on this soon.

I think it sounds too close to Citrix.  I'd confuse the too if I didn't read it close enough.

Just thought I would say again - in the UK, the word Tango is inextricably linked to a fizzy orange drink which is very heavily advertised over here. Tag line from advert "have you been tangoed?"

Have an RSS feed of this topic on me  :D
http://cmeister2.warwickcompsoc.co.uk/scraper.php
I'll probably set the timer to 30 minutes or so, but at the moment it's got no caching. So both OSM and my uni won't be too pleased :)

Oh, and yes, the links don't link to the posts. But thats the printable view for you!  ;)
The links kind of link to the posts. In that they link to the right page :)

Edit: Tested in Awasu - YMMV
Edit Edit: Caching set to 15 minutes. Hope the devs don't get too annoyed with this :)

THE PHILIPPINES will join more than 50 countries in the worldwide
celebration of Software Freedom Day on September 10, 2005.

<<<--- means not only the Philippines will celebrate the Software Freedom Day.

The tension is unbearable...  ;D
I think there is also another important point to consider, and that is that we, the community, have collected 631 ideas for names. I think it's important that they aren't left to stagnate.. as some of them are rather good. So whatever the outcome, I'll be leaving my page up - so people who need inspiration for a project name may find it there.

For probably the last time, the link, as always: http://cmeister2.warwickcompsoc.co.uk/whois/

Great idea!  But maybe you can add the "creator's" name next to their ideas.  After this the creator may have intentions for the name they came up with.  Also while the majority of us are nice enough to donate names to the NewName cause and a CMS we love we may be less reluctant to give the idea to some mooch ;)

Good point.  There were two names that I suggested that were my inventions.  I'd be mighty brassed off if someone outside of OSM used either of them.

Right, so who claims Tango then? :D
If anyone feels desperately that they want their name to be copyrighted, by all means, pm me and I'll put a notice to that effect next to it. Or, I could just take the site down...

Whatever. This has been a fun exercise and I've had my little play with PHP :) it keeps me thinking. Least I got something out of this (syndicating SMF topics  ;)).

I think I suggested Tango to Absalom for an alternative to Project Orange - the accessible *ambo project.

Looking forward as much as anybody to the annoucement of the new name today.

I agree. Crap choice team and such a shame with so many good ideas. Anything starting with a letter J is a non starter. It doesn't scan easily into obvious pronousable syllables either and when you do manage to find a way to say it you sound like Tarzan with a hangover. Unfortunately I think you have rushed into a dead end here. But as that bard said:

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose / By any other name would smell as sweet...

(Just glad you didn't go for that weird looking yellow star fruit citrus thing, ugh!)

just my 2 euro cents  :)
