Re: Suggest a NEW NAME
Naming is a really interesting issue.
We could have a Cheeta or a Dodo ... be careful what we choose.
My firm recomendation is to depart totally from a dance name ... it's too close to Mambo and has no credibility or sense of strength. Our future is not only in the space we occupy with individuals and small business and believe me Mambo doesn't cut the credibility stakes anywhere else ina hurry.
Check out this link and put your desired name in the appropriate place and give this a go.
Enough frivolity
What the problem our CMS is solving?
What impression do we wish to engender when someone hears the name? Funky, cool, trendy.
Do you wish to have a name that we need to describe what it means and does?
Do we have a name that sys what the CMS does?
I've been through this process with 4 clients recently with new businesses and product names that are about to be launched on the International market.
I also posted the following on a marketing forum recently to create some really useful discussion. I'm about to launch a new service and have a new site which I've now completed as a result. (a Mambo and will put it on the showcase shortly)
Whilst this is our community, our code, our place in the sun ....
Remember this is not about us right here and now ....
We may see a cheeta ...
they may see a dodo.

What do you think about when looking at, searching for or deciding on a name for a business?
I'm in the process of coming up with a new business name/web site url and researching what actually works in a name.
In the end from what I can see there are a number of questions that must be addressed and answered...
Do I wish to have a name that defines my product/service category?
Will people apply it to my competition as well as my offering and therefore won't differentiate me from them?
Just because I think the name describes what is being delivered doesn't mean that others will and how do I over come this?
Will my name confuse people if is isn't clear what is says?
Sould my name be abstract, a blank slate upon which to create an image?
Should my name be informative, so customers know immediately what my business is?
Is a coined name (names that come from made-up words) more memorable than names that use real words?
Is a coined name eminently forgettable.
Whilst this is our community, our code, our place in the sun ....
Remember this is not about us right here and now ....
We may see a cheeta ...
they may see a dodo.
We cannot become what we need to be ... by remaining what we are

Of those, only Abadox is open, and it's open across all TLDs.Osiris wrote: "Samba" is a great name. But under the register from Samba.org. Ah, yes, but try Zozco ...Elpie wrote: zosco
(snip ...)
This domain is available in everything except .com. .com is registered in China, but the site has, for me at least, been unresponsive. I do know that zosco is the acronym for a Chinese shipping company, but cannot find anything that would indicate there could be any issues with us using it.

Re: Suggest a NEW NAME
OK, now I've wasted another hour of my life ...
Trolling back through this thread, I pulled out all the names that had open (or semi-open) spots on the major top level domains (TLDs) that don't have the acronym "CMS" in them. I may have missed some dance and/or *ambo derivatives, as I'm biased against those ... Also, I haven't trademark searched them (hey, somebody else can put in an hour -- http://www.wipo.int/ipdl/en/search/madr ... struct.jsp):
Abadox -- open in all TLDs.
Djambo -- taken in .com, open in all other TLDs.
Djumbo -- taken in .com, open in all other TLDs.
FlowerFox -- taken in .com, open in all other TLDs.
FreeMOS -- taken in .com, open in all other TLDs.
Mbomba -- open in all TLDs.
MyMOS -- open in all TLDs.
osFox -- open in all TLDs.
Rezilliant -- taken in .com, open in all other TLDs.
Unwaba -- open in all TLDs.
Wallcreeper -- taken in .com, open in all other TLDs.
Zosco -- taken in .com, open in all other TLDs.
Zozco -- open in all TLDs.
Many more can be opened up by adding "Free" or "My".
I'm going back to my regularly scheduled life right now.
Best of luck.

As a generic name it would also be hard to protect.

If you want to follow the latino dance theme: Cumbia will fit the bill. I think cumbia is probably my favorite of all the latino styles.

If the community wants to insist on its right to benefit from the $ambo brand that it built, I suggest: TrueMOS or RealMOS. Both are available.

Re: Suggest a NEW NAME
I was thinking of Osma or Ozma (from the book), but they look taken. I like Osmose, osmosis, I don't know I think it is too meaningful, actually. I did learn this CMS by osmosis, but I don't know how attractive it is. "We're using Osmosis" to transform our website, it doesn't sound very good to me.

Folks:
I hate to sound like a schoolteacher here, but we've done almost two solid days of just throwing words up against the wall to see if they're going to stick and we haven't gotten very far.
I can't speak for anybody else on this thread, but I sure would prefer that you at least do a domain search (visit your favorite domain-seller: godaddy, netsol, etc) to see if the name is available in most TLDs (and if it isn't available in all, tell us which ones are) before you post.
Also, while nobody has banned the letters "CMS" outright, we do need to think a bit into the future, when The System With No Name becomes more of a framework than specifically a CMS. We're beginning to see that already, with the CiviCRM initiative, where TSWNN provides only the front-end to a much more complex set of software.
Unless you can make a good case for using CMS as part of the name, try to avoid it.
