Re: Suggest a NEW NAME
Well if nothing else, I feel we have at least compiled a fairly comprehensive list of the worse possible names. I'll look at the sunny side of it and call that progress!
I used to have a life. Now I have nameservers.

The eagle-eyed of you will now notice that there is a rudimentary voting system on the OSM list site. It *is* basically a 5 minute hack job, but it'll do as long as it's not abused. Yes, you can sit there for an hour clicking on your favourite name, but won't you feel cheated if it wins?
Anyway, it probably won't be used for any qualitative choice anyway!

Oh well, seems all this work is for naught1. A new project name
We have decided to choose a new name for the project, formerly known as Mambo and have accepted the offer of free advice from a world leading brand consultancy. We had found ourselves going around in circles with the caliber of names suggested but now we’re close.
In the next day or two we will have available a web form for those with existing 'mambo-based' domains to register to recieve a pre-release of the name a short time before the official release. We are doing this so that you the community have the opportunity to re-register your mambo* domains. Registration of the domains is up to the owner and there will be conditions that will need to be agreed to to receive the advanced notice (Mitch/James doing this).

Re: Suggest a NEW NAME
No, not at all. They are getting advice from the agency.
I'm sure this name suggestion topic (with your awesome help with the database listing, cmeister2) will help them somewhat.
At least, I hope they use this list as food for consideration.
I do think it is a good idea for them to use a brand consultant agency.
I still think that a name-searching tool could be useful for new open source projects, if there was a way to allow it to search trademarks.

Good point... your looking into the future, arn't you?cdkaminsky wrote:Triplicate wrote: Most 3 and 4 letter names on the planet are already taken however these domains are still available....
os-om.com .net and .org are all available
so is...
osom.web.com
osom.us.com
osom.name
Lots to choose from.
osomforge.com .net .org all avaliable
osomserver.com .net .org all avaliable
OSOM is great for many reasons already stated....not sure if this has been said or not....but it is short.... so all the 3rd party, fan sites, etc will not have URLs that seem to never end...
OSOM is awesome. Everyone needs to see all previous posts regarding this name. It's magic! It's got lots of good things going for it. Go back to where this name was introduced in this thread about page 27 where "funkeyunivers" intorduced it. Unfortunately you don't see his logo any more.

The second font looks very much like the one in Uplink... Better make sure ARC doesn't find out, you don't want Revelation on your hands (googles: No, it's not the same)
Some nice logos though
And someone must like it, they voted for it 7 times!

Beginning from the top, start calling the best Marketing and PR agencies out there that work with tech companies and ask them if they'll help come up with a new name and other branding for this operation and how much that might cost. Just for example, someone like Chiat-Day could probably produce an extraordinary list of conceptual names in very short order.
They are very right-brained with these things and they do it well. They could also resolve domain, trademark, graphical design and other issues as well as produce a plan to assist in bringing forth the new product and associated organizational entity. I would venture they could do it all in considerably less than thirty days. You never know, you might find a fine agency that would do the job for little or nothing.
Congratulations and praise {insert your preferred divine entity here}! BTW, I'm one of those people who just looooove to say I told you so. :P∓quot;osmteam"\ wrote: 1. A new project name

I will say after several seconds of careful consideration, I've decided someone who lives in the glass house of "dayworks", should probably not be casting stones at other name choosers.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is this a fork of the Mambo project?
No, it is a rebranding effort that will continue to run largely on the existing codebase. Work is continuing on the project by the same team that has developed Mambo as you know it today. Therefore we see it as continuing development rather than a 'fork'.

Re: Suggest a NEW NAME
You know, a long time ago, they chose the name of my local footbal team, by first looking through all the logo design possibilities..The "Seahawks" name stuck, because the logo possibilities were some of the most beautiful designs yet seen in the NFL.
I like being able to think of the new name/logo possibilities this way, it really helps!

Re: Suggest a NEW NAME
I am a relative newbie and would like to put forward a few comments concerning the name.
What about something like "Community" - it appears to me there seems to be a community of developers and like out here. I did a quick thesasuras search and did not really come up with a decent other word.
I am using it for a not for profit organisation involving a community of people. Perhaps it is a thought as to what to call the product.
Sorry - I have not read the 36 or so pages so I do not know if anyone else has suggested this.

I think if the developers are serious, a name has been picked already and an announcement will follow shortly. It's not good to keep waiting in this storm of "Miro drops devteam".
