Re: Suggest a NEW NAME
I saw too many names, but i agree the new name MUST have not NOTHING to be with the past, so no:
*ambo
tango
jambo
....
I saw some good one here, the most i liked was Melody cms.
But i will throw in one more:
GPLcms

Tango sounds good to me..
especially with the logo that was created, it gives the impression that users have been brought together with the T that has been split down the middle..
errr that kinda contradicted itself

Re: Suggest a NEW NAME
It should also be pointed out that the future of Mambo as an application framework is just as important as its being known as a good CMS solution. 5.0 will definitely appeal to developers on a larger scale because of its advances. Perhaps adding CMS in the name is to be avoided as we look at the project's future scale.
My vote is still with Freed because of its unlimited potential.
I'd also like to mention that to validify this project we need to be focused on solidifying the name and releasing a new version as soon as we can. May the best code win.

Re: Suggest a NEW NAME
even though I was the first person to suggest the name Koala, further research (with Igor Dutra) has learned us that a Koala is not social at all. So I don't think it can represent our community.
We all know the Bee, a stingy animal, however the second meaning to the word bee is:
A social gathering where people combine work, competition, and amusement: a quilting bee.
And with a wink to the past, the bee spreads the nectar from the flower, further:
idiom:
a bee in (one's) bonnet
An impulsive, often eccentric turn of mind; a notion.
So my new suggestion is:

Re: Suggest a NEW NAME
First off I just want to say that its great you guys havent dropped the ball after being shafted by Miro.
From the names ive seen I do like Enso. The meaning and the heritage behind it seem quite strong. Regardless of what name you guys pick it is sure to be a strong team to lead the community. Kudos on a job well done in past and surely in future.

Enso is taken on most of the TLDs. I really liked it, though.coreyfmiller wrote: From the names ive seen I do like Enso. The meaning and the heritage behind it seem quite strong. Yes, please. While I know this has been fun, it's clear that a new name needs to be chosen quickly to keep the momentum going. Please, any suggestions from here on out, check out the domain names and google the word to see if it's used as a trademark somewhere before posting it.Elpie wrote: When suggesting a name may I recommend that we each check out:

Re: Suggest a NEW NAME
This is a good point but the availability of usable names without some form of CMS or OS tag seems to be making this an issue. I'm all for meaningful names but it reminds me of a friend who named his daughter a deeply meaningful an thoroughly unpronouncable gaelic name which everyone amends to something short and snappy anyway...gsbe wrote: It should also be pointed out that the future of Mambo as an application framework is just as important as its being known as a good CMS solution. 5.0 will definitely appeal to developers on a larger scale because of its advances. There is a word used in Jamaica "IRIE" it simply means everything is good, fine, and wonderful. I know it may not be a perfect name but it is a thought. I also like MyCMS since it is a lot like MySQL which without it we would not have the CMS at all.

- Doesn't sound close to "Mambo" so that it won't be confused with it
- Possibly NOT use CMS in the name

Re: Suggest a NEW NAME
I have been playing around with ideas for awhile (and spending way too much time searching trademark databases!) and the latest idea is this..
zosco
"z" can mean anything you like
"os" for open source
"co" continues on?
Thoughts behind my idea of a good name:
1. not generic and therefore can be easily trademarked/otherwise protected
2. not in common usage, so is more likely to be remembered
3. not the name of an existing entity that could challenge the use
4. at least the .net and .org domains available
5. short, repetitive sounds, making recognition easier.
Another 0.02c worth - at this rate the new incarnation of what-used-to-be-Mambo will get a decent fund!
This domain is available in everything except .com. .com is registered in China, but the site has, for me at least, been unresponsive. I do know that zosco is the acronym for a Chinese shipping company, but cannot find anything that would indicate there could be any issues with us using it.

Re: Suggest a NEW NAME
A lot of nice names indeed. Personaly I fancy the ones that have no fonetic connection with M*mb* (like Jango, Tango etc etc) or explicitly say something about the breakup. Those should be left behind.
I don't know any more (good) suggestions myself, but what I do like to know is the timeframe we are looking at for choosing the new name. I think the best way is for the devteam to choose the name themselves (using some suggestion from this thread), but I'd like to know when decisions about this (and the public announcemnt) are likely to be made (i don't expect an exact date, just some indication would be nice..).
The reason for this is not because everyone is just curious, but a lot of us have M*mb* sites that need to be changed because of this. I for one (I have a dutch mambo portal) realy need to plan in some time for this, along with my team. I allready had some bad nights because of this (as more of you i guess) and knowing when the name is chosen makes life a little easier. If, for example, the name is chosen in about 3 weeks, I know I can just sleep for the next 2,5 weeks before I need to stay a wake for the news 24/7. I don't think I can keep up with being awake 24/7, not knowing when to expect the new name
And, as said: when placing names here, pse think about the 'requirements' in the first post:
* it should be easy to remember and spell
* the domain should be available
* the meaning of the word if applicable (for example if it's a swahili word)
* has no trademark or copyright restrictions or prior use (for example, Mambo is also a trademark of Mambo Clothing)
Reaction to some names mentioned:
When the whole Mozilla-thing became complicated, Phoenix has been its name for a while. They couldn't keep this name for various reasons, at least for one that there is a software company (something to do with databases I believe), then changed to Firebird, then changed to Firefox.
I think phoenix or derivatives are out - it will lead to the same trouble as it did with Mozilla.
Bee - there is an open source forum project called Beehive ( http://beehiveforum.sourceforge.net/ ) so I wouldn't do that either.
(I like the suggestions Enso and Hanasu, the plain English words just don't appeal to me too much)

Re: Suggest a NEW NAME
Just an idea...
Prophet
From dictionary.com:
proph·et n.
1. A person who speaks by divine inspiration or as the interpreter through whom the will of a god is expressed.
2. A person gifted with profound moral insight and exceptional powers of expression.
3. A predictor; a soothsayer.
4. The chief spokesperson of a movement or cause.
Has a double meaning -- the above and profit. Mostly I'm thinking of the non-religious aspect of the name, namely definitions 2, 3, and 4 above.
