what's Joomla means in your language??

Post by apek » Fri Sep 02, 2005 12:27 am

According to joomla.org, the word joomla or jumla (watever its name sound or spell), the word means 'whole' or 'all together', or in other words TOTAL. This is very beautiful as is also means the joomla is made up from the total commitment or whole efforts from all who care about the future of this software which driven by open source spirit.

Back to the thread, in my language (Malaysian) the Joomla term is similar with "Jumlah" (pronounced same as Joomla) also means Total.Whole or Sum. I'm not sure if this is on purpose or not but the trm Joomla seem suit quite number of language in the globe.I think it also means the same in Indonesian language.

How about u guys?

In Malaysian, the pronounciation of joomla is almost the same with the spoken word of ' jom la' = means 'lets go'.

In Arabic, it has two strict meanings:
  • Sum or total
  • a whole sentence

For Dutch speaking people "Joomla!", or anything close, has no meaning at all.

It has no meaning in Tagalog. But there's a nearer Tagalog slang "Jokla" which means gay.

Well, as said before:

no real meaning in german language... but pronouncation sounds a bit like beeing drunken (for ears which hear german language all the time) - and so it may sound like "Schummler" after some beer and a too much whiskey...
"Schummler" ... mh... i guess "cheater" would be the right translation.
Nevertheless - no need to worry - it takes some "creativity" to hear "Schummler"  - time will show how it will be used over here in germany.

Hello!

In Estonian "Joomla" has the meaning of a drinking place (where they drink alcoholic drinks ofcourse), actually a place where drunkers drink all the time.  :P

It may have some links to the "being together" part.

Besides the two meanings in Arabic (sentence and sum), the word is used sometimes to indicate wholesale pricing, such as in Bay3 bil-joomla (or wholesale trade, achat/vente en gros).

Some close words in Arabic, besides the two meanings mentioned before:
  • jamaal: beauty
  • jamal: camel
  • jomaa: the day Friday (my name by the way)
  • jameel: beautiful (male)
  • jameela: beautiful (female)

There is no direct connections with any expression in Slovenian but sound's like like a child exclamation for a good food.

There is no letter, "j" in the Maori language, and no words with two, "o"s - so, in New Zealand Maori, the name is unpronouncable.
As there are few Maori who don't speak English this isn't a major problem :)

However, names with that double "o" sound are VERY Australian - and THAT is a potential barrier in NZ.  LOL

It's the same in Estonian. :) Estonian and Finnish are quite similar sometimes, but often there are misleading words when you think they look similar, but the meaning isn't actually.

Right, a thing that sometimes results in amusing situations. So it's a doomed future for us Estonians and Finns with the new Juomala. :)

Being Estonian myself I think we are overreacting here  8)

Yes, it crossed my mind for a moment, I mean that it has some similarity with Jooma, but then again how much people have you really heard say word Joomla? And then again, as I never mentioned Mambo to my clients, I will continue this tactic with JOOMLA!.

Last thing I want, is clients running searches through neti.ee and finding some schoolboy's homepages on mambo and etc. I once said to client that website will be done with mambo, he found some crappy installation with butt ugly template and refused no matter how I tried to explain that my solution would be different.

However, you should see those faces of my friends who know what I do, when I say that CMS name changed from Mambo to Joomla(pronounce DZUMLA). You see, for a week I was like: "Guys,, there is REVOLUTION,,, Everything is so cool! It will be great! They will have a new name! And so on with high emotional touch. Now I olny say the name when they ask me  ::)  ::)  ::)  ::)  ::)  ::)  ::)
